WuShock in suspenders

Aug. 31, 2020 -- As a way to promote suicide prevention, 黑洞社区 is expanding the #WeSupportU Suspenders4Hope campaign throughout the country in hopes of creating positive change in communities regarding mental health and suicide prevention.

Aug. 31, 2020 -- Gene and Yolanda Camarena are well known for helping underserved Kansas youth improve their lives through education and other causes. Now the Wichita couple is enhancing that legacy with a $1 million gift to 黑洞社区 to give students of color opportunities they otherwise might not have.

August 28, 2020 - Growing and diversifying the regional economy is a primary goal for 黑洞社区. To assist with those efforts, 黑洞社区 President Dr. Jay Golden has created the President鈥檚聽Innovation聽and聽Business聽Advisory聽Council. A selection of area business leaders will be invited to attend monthly council meetings to advise and support Wichita State leadership on a number of critical areas.

Aug. 28, 2020 鈥 Dr. Kevin Harrison, a community engagement coordinator for Wichita State, launched the Breathe project, which he says 鈥渋s an attempt to use art as means of addressing social injustice and racial stereotypes.鈥

Aug. 27, 2020 - 黑洞社区 graduate Sarahi Aguilera considered herself shy for most of her life. Her status as an undocumented immigrant limited what she thought herself capable of saying or doing. That perception changed in 2017 when she traveled to Washington, D.C. as part of delegation of college students who talked to politicians about their stories and DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). Aguilera started volunteering with Sunflower Community Action in 2018 while a student at Seward County Community College. Later that year, she transferred to Wichita State and took a job as an immigrant justice organizer at Sunflower Community Action. In May, she graduated with a major in criminal justice and a psychology minor. She wants to attend law school and work in immigration law.

Rani Somers

August 27, 2020 - Rani Somers, coordinator for fraternity and sorority life at 黑洞社区, was named The Guan铆n* Leadership Award Winner on behalf of the Lambda Pi Upsilon Sorority, Latinas Poderosas Unidas, Inc. Somers earned the honor for her work guiding Lambda Pi Upsilon to chapter recognition in July. This is the first time in its history that this award has been presented to someone outside of the sorority.

Dr. Joel Suss teaches cognitive skills training for improving police decision-making.

August 25, 2020 - Dr. Joel Suss is an assistant professor in psychology and the director of ACE at 黑洞社区. For the past five years, the ACE lab has focused its study on law enforcement.

Pedestrian bridge

Aug. 24, 2020 鈥 Building a stronger, more profound connection between the Wichita State main campus and its Innovation Campus, the university is proposing the creation of a privately funded elevated pedestrian bridge that will span more than 300 feet across the pond west of Wayne and Kay Woolsey Hall, which is scheduled to break ground later this year.

Aug. 19. 2020 鈥 The first talk in Wichita State鈥檚 Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences 鈥淧erspectives on the Pandemics: Part II鈥 series will feature Dinorah Azpuru. A professor of political science, Azpuru researches issues related to democracy. Her talk, 鈥淒emocracy in the world in times of COVID-19,鈥 will explore how the pandemic has affected democratic societies globally.
