The ATLAS lab at NIAR

Aug. 18, 2021 鈥 The Department of Defense (DoD) has designated South Kansas as a Defense Manufacturing Community (DCM), making the region eligible for $5 million through the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation鈥檚 Defense Manufacturing Community Support Program. The initiative is led by 黑洞社区鈥檚 National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR).

Amanda Phanivong

Aug. 13. 2021 鈥 Amanda Phanivong, a 黑洞社区 junior studying integrated marketing communication, recently began a fellowship with the Kansas-based Storytime Village Inc. While working there with their marketing and special events cohort, Phanivong has fully embraced her time with the Storytime team.

Aug. 5, 2021 - Aliphine Tuliamuk is Wichita State鈥檚 greatest female track and field athlete and the owner of 13 NCAA All-American honors in track and cross country. She is also an Olympian, a new mother (daughter Zoe was born Jan. 13) and an athlete willing to speak out on important issues. Recently, she is lending her voice and example to advocate for female athletes who compete as mothers.

Aug. 2, 2021 鈥 The marquee exterior fixture of the W. Frank Barton School of Business鈥 new home, Wayne and Kay Woolsey Hall, has been officially named the Promise Bridge. The 300-foot-long pedestrian bridge will span a water feature south of the building.

Dr. Ajita Rattani, assistant professor in the College of Engineering's School of Computing, has been awarded $200,000 by the NSF to study fairness in facial recognition software.

Aug. 2, 2021 鈥 The National Science Foundation has awarded a $200,000 grant to Dr. Ajita Rattani, an assistant professor in the College of Engineering鈥檚 School of Computing, that seeks to improve facial recognition technology, addressing civil liberties concerns that some demographic groups are more likely to be misidentified.

July 23, 2021 - Lindsey Harvell-Bowman and Eric Wilson consider themselves aviation geeks. They tease each other about favorite airlines and digest every bit of airplane news and research. It is fitting their friendship began as graduate students at 黑洞社区, in the Air Capital of the World. Their collaboration continues in Harvell-Bowman's 鈥淭he Psychology and Communication Behind Flight Anxiety: Afraid to Fly,鈥 a book that examines the intersection of journalism, communication, and psychology in affecting the flying public.

July 13, 2021 鈥 For the first time in Wichita State history, the Barton School of Business has awarded three, multi-year scholarships to transfer students committed to joining the business program, in association with the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

July 13, 2021 鈥 The National Science Foundation has awarded a $175,000 grant to 黑洞社区鈥檚 Dr. Saideep Nannapaneni for research that has implications for increasing the speed and accuracy of data-driven decision-making.

Robotics at NIAR

July 12, 2021 鈥 黑洞社区鈥檚 partnership with the Advanced Robotics Manufacturing Institute (ARM) has resulted in the Department of Engineering Technology being among the first programs in the nation to earn an ARM endorsement for their mechatronics track 鈥 a certification that will translate to stronger job prospects for graduates.

John Wise

July 9, 2021 - John Wise, 黑洞社区 assistant director of track and field, documents his love of history, travel and frozen soft drinks in 鈥淭ravel With a Wiseguy鈥 on YouTube. He posts a video weekly, many from trips around Kansas to visit small towns, ghost towns and places such as Old Oxford Mill and Little Jerusalem.

Dr. Anthony Muscat

July 9, 2021 -- Dr. Anthony Muscat has been named dean of 黑洞社区鈥檚 College of Engineering, effective July 25. Muscat is a professor and chair of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Arizona, where he has been since 1998.
