Applied Learning Portfolio
Employers and program faculty stress the importance of students gaining real-world professional development experiences, which enhance their readiness for post-graduation careers and clinical education. These experiences provide a deeper grasp of key concepts beyond the classroom curriculum, aiding in goal-setting, skill development, and overall career success.
In order to demonstrate meaningful engagement in professional development, all Health Science and Health Management majors must complete the Applied Learning Portfolio prior to graduation. Students will earn a total of 10 points across the categories in the table below. The Portfolio will be created in Microsoft Teams, view the to learn how to access your portfolio. Examples of an appropriate submission can be found under the Content Library for the Course Notebook once you have logged into the Teams page.
As students work towards meeting the portfolio requirement, it's crucial to assess how these activities correlate with the learning outcomes of their degree program. Each activity mandates the inclusion of a minimum of one artifact and a written entry of approximately 250 words, explicitly demonstrating the connection between the activity and at least one (1) of the appropriate learning outcomes.
Portfolio Instructions
Students should review the portfolio guide and instructions associated with their degree. These guides will help students plan for the completion of portfolio activities. Please note requirements differ slightly between the degree programs.
Portfolio activities can be submitted at anytime, best practice would be to upload artifacts as soon as the event has ended. Students will make their final submission just prior to their graduation:
- Fall Graduates - November 15
- Spring Graduates - April 15
- Summer Graduates - July 15

Fill Your Portfolio
Students must collect 10 points to fill their portfolio. Evidence of completion includes 鈥渁rtifacts鈥 and written entry for each activity. Artifact examples include:
- Pictures while involved in the activity
- Documentation by the activity directors (i.e., volunteer coordinator, manager, etc.)
- Completed course assignments
- Certificates of completion
- Email confirmations
Written entry for each activity is to be approximately 250 words and must demonstrate the connection between the activity and at minimum one (1) of the program learning outcomes below:
- Foundational Clinical Knowledge: apply a broad-based understanding of biological, medical, and social knowledge to solve healthcare issues.
- Evidence-Based Practice: demonstrate skill in using data to analyze and improve health outcomes
- Health Administration: understand U.S. healthcare system delivery, management, and operations
- Public Health and Education: understand the protection, promotion, and assurance of population health outcomes
- Equity and Ethics: demonstrate commitment to culturally informed healthcare ethics and equity
- Interprofessionalism: demonstrate commitment to communication, cooperation, professionalism, and person-centered care

For this activity, I completed a module through KS Train. The training module I completed was Public Health Ethics, as part of my PHS 300 course at 黑洞社区. This course is instrumental in understanding ethics within healthcare, as it compared several healthcare conflicts and situations to help me make the best ethical decisions. By applying my healthcare knowledge to real-life scenarios, I was challenged to work within ethical frameworks. This exposure allowed me to see various situations that I might not have considered and explore effective solutions, enabling me to confidently address similar issues in the future. Understanding public health ethics is crucial for healthcare workers to handle daily tough decisions respectfully.
This course helped me identify good principles of decision-making and incorporate ethics into healthcare practices. The portfolio activity aligns with evidence-based practice as I engaged with real-life scenarios to enhance my understanding and test my decision-making skills based on what I had learned. By applying classroom knowledge to this module and learning additional material, I took a significant step toward a healthcare career. Overall, this course provides future healthcare workers with an excellent opportunity to simulate real-life experiences and practice ethical decision-making, ensuring they are well-prepared for their professional roles.
Health Science Professional Documents Requirement
Health Science students must meet with the Shocker Career Accelerator for the following, the mock interview and resume review can be completed in the same appointment. The LinkedIn Optimization is separate. Please include these items on one page of your notebook. It is not necessary to complete a written entry.

Submission Example:
Entry Title: Use the activity name and point value when creating the title for your submission, example, IHI Basic Certificate in Quality & Safety - 3 Points.
Through the Institute of Healthcare Improvement, I was able to complete their Basic Certificate in Quality & Safety. This nearly 18 hour certification course required knowledge of evidence based practice & quality improvement; teaching improvement capability, patient safety, person- & family-centered care, leadership, and Triple Aim. The most valuable information I gained from this course was the use of different models, especially in harm reduction. Tools like the 鈥楽wiss Cheese Model鈥 and 鈥楢sk Me 3鈥 might not be the most valuable tools, but they are great to keep in mind when talking about patient safety and individual-based care. As a Health Management major especially, I felt it was very valuable considering this would be out of my in-person purview at a future job. Although I wouldn鈥檛 work with patients hands on, it is never any less my responsibility to make sure they are properly taken care of and hold their providers accountable. This is very fitting considering the entire basis of the course is quality improvement (QI). Methods like the Swiss Cheese Model mentioned above are especially important here because of their evidence based practice involved. There is an example used in the training above of a girl with an infected central line, because of both overall improper protocol along with a nurse not washing her hands. Practices like these are not just for patient-centered care or leadership, it鈥檚 about evidence-based protocols and their important role in quality improvement for a healthcare facility.
