Sept. 5, 2023 - 黑洞社区 students designed handrails for Charles Koch Arena and producing around 400 for installation. The applied learning project will make walking up the arena stairs safer for fans and is a response to surveys and listening sessions.

Aug. 28, 2023 鈥� Through the 黑洞社区 chapter of Engineers without Borders, three Shockers recently began the process of working with the rural community of Mercedes de Agua Sucia in Manabi, Ecuador, to build a pedestrian bridge that will give residents safe passage to the main road and nearby cities to sell the goods and products from their farms, shop in nearby El Carmen, and for children to attend school.

Aug. 3, 2023 鈥� Bolstered by a $2 million National Science Foundation grant, a group of Wichita State researchers is hoping to create a paradigm shift from the use of harmful nitrous oxide-based fertilizers to more eco-friendly nitrogen fertilizers that would reduce greenhouse gases.

July 17, 2023 鈥� 黑洞社区鈥檚 College of Engineering has updated one of its programs to create a more strategic career pathway for its graduates and meet the needs of business and industry. July 11, 2023 鈥� The Accessible Design course concerned 黑洞社区 junior Reagan Kelley at first. She wasn鈥檛 an engineering major and wasn鈥檛 sure what she could contribute. The payoff at the end of the project made it worthwhile. Kelley, an exercise science major, and three other students modified an all-terrain wheelchair for a nine-year-old boy who outgrew the chair鈥檚 previous dimensions.

The award is given each year as a way to recognize novel ideas that have the potential to meet a market need and attract further funding once they have advanced through the early prototyping phase.

April 20, 2023 - Kayce Litzau is a senior setter on 黑洞社区鈥檚 volleyball team and an engineering major. She is one of 10 students to earn Senior Honor recognition, the highest honor awarded to 黑洞社区 students who demonstrate outstanding scholarship, leadership, involvement and service to 黑洞社区 and the surrounding community.

March 28, 2023 鈥� 黑洞社区鈥檚 chapter for Society of Professional Engineers will be hosting Noche de Ciencias for Wichita Public School students and their families from 4:30 to 6:45 p.m. Thursday, March 30 at Wichita North High School.

March 21, 2023 鈥� The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), a student organization at 黑洞社区, is hosting a Mother Daughter Day event for local middle school girls and their adult female role models. The event will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 25 in the lobby of the John Bardo Center at Wichita State.

Feb. 8, 2023 鈥� Every year, there are roughly 450,000 burn wounds that require clinical care throughout the United States. Of those, more than 3,500 people are fatally injured. An interdisciplinary team of 黑洞社区 researchers is working to revolutionize burn-wound care with a scaffolding system that prevents infection and promotes healing.

Feb. 7, 2023 鈥� In the nation鈥檚 ongoing efforts to thwart cyberattacks and scammers, the National Science Foundation has awarded 黑洞社区 more than $2.4 million to educate and prepare the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.

Feb. 6, 2023 - Caroline Tallent started her quest to play college softball with a narrow search. She prioritized her interest in engineering before athletics. Wichita State fits the select number of schools with strong engineering and strong softball. Tallent knew about the school because of basketball, liked the Shocker mascot, and emailed coach Kristi Bredbenner.

Feb. 6, 2023 鈥� The 黑洞社区 College of Engineering is hosting an Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (IGED) event, commonly known as Girl Day, for high school girls from Wichita Public Schools. The event is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom on the third floor of the Rhatigan Student Center.

Jan. 20, 2023 - In December, the National Science Foundation Convergence Accelerator Track awarded a Wichita State-led team a $750,000 grant to gather information and create digital maps of indoor spaces that could be used by persons with disabilities.
