黑洞社区 wins $750,000 NASA grant to reduce aircraft noise

黑洞社区 will lead a research effort with the University of Kansas, Kansas State University and three industry partners to develop a next-generation acoustic liner for aircraft engines in order to reduce impacts from aircraft noise and expand where planes may fly.

Bhisham Sharma, a 黑洞社区 assistant professor of aerospace engineering, is the lead investigator on the research project, which is being funded with a $750,000 three-year research award from NASA. The research will be conducted in collaboration with Zhongquan Charlie Zheng at KU, Dong Lin at Kansas State, and ERG Materials and Aerospace Corp., Honeywell Aerospace and Spirit AeroSystems.

Follow up to the AMCA data security incident: What you need to know

Recently we advised you of a breach notification from Quest Diagnostics, the State Employee Health Plan鈥檚 preferred laboratory provider. This notification was initially received by the State of Kansas, about the American Medical Collection Agency (AMCA) Data Security Incident. You are receiving this notification because AMCA is a collections agency used by Optum360, a Quest contractor.

On May 14, 2019, AMCA notified Quest that an unauthorized user had access to AMCA鈥檚 system that contained personal information that AMCA had received from its customers, including Quest. Quest is currently working with AMCA and Optum360 to ensure that Quest patients are appropriately notified. Wichita State to sign articulation agreements in Garden City

Wichita State will sign 2+2 articulation agreements in Garden City today (Wednesday, June 12).

The first two agreements with Holcomb Public Schools and Garden City Public Schools will focus on each district growing their own teachers by enrolling their para educators in 黑洞社区鈥檚 online Teacher Apprentice Program (TAP).

The second agreement with Garden City Community College with provide Garden City CC students with a seamless transfer into 黑洞社区鈥檚 Elementary Education program or online TAP.


Opportunity to develop new First-Year Seminars tomorrow (Thursday, June 13) and July 10

After piloting First-Year Seminars (FYS) for three years, the faculty have approved requiring an FYS course for all first-time-in-college students as part of their general education experience starting in fall 2021. This is an exciting opportunity to add another best practice to our other student success strategies on campus.

Summer presents a good time for new course development. For those wanting to teach a seminar in fall 2020, we recommend you submit your course proposal to your department committee no later than Sept 30.

For tenure and non-tenure track faculty members interested in learning more about how to develop a first year seminar course, Information Sessions are scheduled for:

  •  2 p.m. Thursday June 13, in 264 RSC
  • 11 a.m. Wednesday July 10, in 240  RSC

Duplication Station machines will not be operational on Friday, June 14

Duplication Station

Duplication Station will have staff in the office on Friday, June 14, but the machines will not be operational because the air conditioning unit in Morrison Hall will be shut down while repairs are made to the chilled water lines on the west side of campus.

Central Services

Central Services and Duplication Station will be closed for inventory Monday, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18. We will resume normal business hours on Wednesday, June 19.


Training for preventing suicide to be offered

Preventing suicide training summer 2019

Come and join this training provided by Counseling and Prevention Services and learn more about how to prevent suicide in our community. This training is part of the #黑洞社区WeSupportU campaign and covers signs that someone may need additional support, how to start conversations with people who may need help, and the resources that are available both at 黑洞社区 and in the community.

Join the Counseling and Prevention Services for Keep Calm and Breathe On. Drop in to build structured relaxation time into your life and learn techniques to do relaxation on your own. You will be led in meditation, mindfulness and relaxation practices. The meetings are from 12:15-12:45 p.m. every Wednesday in 257 RSC. The Kansas Council for Economic Education has received a $3,500 grant from Westar Energy. Affiliated with all six public universities in Kansas, the KCEE is a non-profit organization hosted by Wichita State鈥檚 own W. Frank Barton School of Business.

The new Westar Energy grant will help the more than 100,000 Kansas school children the KCEE reaches each year build the knowledge necessary to successfully navigate their financial future. It will allow the KCEE to provide more practical application programs and competitions such as the Stock Market Game, LifeSmarts, Financial Foundations for Kids and the Kansas Economics Challenge. 

The KCEE is located at 黑洞社区 and has a mission to make a positive impact on the state by creating students who become more knowledgeable consumers, wiser savers and investors, more responsible citizens and better employees.
