Applied learning at Wichita State

At Wichita State, applied learning is everything. In fact, every degree we offer has a guaranteed applied learning or research experience built right into it equipping you with the relevant skills and experience to make you workforce ready before graduation.

Admission to the program

For admission into the MLS program, you must:

  • Be admitted to 黑洞社区
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Complete the pre-professional requirements with grades of C (2.0) or better, and within the last 10 years before entering the professional phase of the Medical Laboratory Sciences program
  • Submit a department application, which includes the following sections:
    • Evidence of knowledge of healthcare
    • Evidence of the ability to lead or participate in diverse teams
    • Evidence of knowledge of the profession, and rationale for entering the MLS profession
  • Submit three letters of reference, two from individuals who know your science abilities and one professional reference who is able to speak about your work habits or professional behavior.
  • Points will be assigned to the following areas: GPA, application and references.
    • Students who have earned the minimum points for acceptance are required to participate in an interview and basic skills assessment. The skills assessment will be based on the technical standards for admission into the MLS program as stated in the MLS student handbook.

Inside the Program

Students gain hands-on experience through volunteering and clinical sites

Medical Laboratory Sciences students participate in a variety of activities outside the classroom and lab, including performing glucose screenings at health fairs, coordinating the annual Gift of Life Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Registry event, attending industry conferences, and participating in fun, competitive knowledge-based laboratory contests.

Students gain real-world experience at clinical sites throughout the state and region, training side-by-side with laboratory professionals in microbiology, hematology, chemistry and blood banking.

Curriculum

The MLS degree requires 28-31 credit hours of prerequisite science courses, in addition to general education requirements, and 54 credit hours of professional courses鈥攊ncluding applied learning in local health care settings. Once completed, you'll be eligible to take the national certification examination through the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
