Honors Event Dates and Reminders

January 24th- Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol SUBMISSION DEADLINE

The Kansas Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol event is an opportunity for students to present their research experiences virtually to state lawmakers, Board of Regents members, and the 黑洞社区 community on March 2, 3, and 4.

Up to 40 students participate each year representing each of the state鈥檚 eight public four-year institutions. Projects from a broad range of disciplines are encouraged -- especially those that relate to the state of Kansas and issues important to the State Legislature (e.g. education, health, agriculture, aviation, biotechnology, energy, transportation, manufacturing, environment, and social services).

Up to five projects will be selected from each institution, and students working on the same research project are encouraged to apply as a group. Apply by Jan. 24.

January 28th- University Honors College Council meeting

The University Honors College Council is the governing board and decision-making body for the college. They meet at least once a semester, and will be meeting on January 28th at 3:30pm. 

All students are welcome to bring ideas and/or concerns to the council. Email honorsassistant@wichita.edu, and your question, topic, or concern will be forwarded to council leadership.

February 1st- National Student Exchange APPLICATION DEADLINE

Would you like to enroll in classes at another university for a semester or two? If this sounds appealing to you, you may be a candidate to participate in the National Student Exchange program. Along with more than 170 other colleges and universities, 黑洞社区 participates in a program that allows students to study a semester or a year at another participating university. Students can live in a different area and experience an entirely new campus environment while continuing to pay 黑洞社区 tuition and working towards a 黑洞社区 degree.

February 8th- Great Plains Honors Council conference PROPOSAL DEADLINE

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, GPHC will be offered virtually this year. Although this is disappointing, we are going to try to provide as many opportunities for students to present their research as if we were meeting in person. The conference will be held March 12-13th, 2021, via a digital platform, and we will only be charging a $10 registration fee. Poster presentations will be asynchronous and available to view prior to the beginning of the conference. Oral presentations will be synchronous and held Saturday, March 13th, via a digital platform.

Both the Dennis Boe paper and John Britt poster awards will be awarded this year as well.

This is a great conference for students who have not presented before as well as for more experienced scholars. It is a student-friendly and intellectually curious community of regional honors programs.

The deadline for GPHC 2021 proposals is February 8th at 5:00pm. 

February 10th- Honors Ambassadors Meeting

The Honors Ambassadors will have there first monthly meeting of the semester on February 10th at 4 PM. 

Honors Ambassadors assist the Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College in the recruitment of future Honors students. Honors Ambassadors represent the Honors College at various events and activities across campus.

February 11th- Faculty Town Hall with President 

February 11th at 3pm there will be a virtual town hall with President Rick Muma. This is a special opportunity for Cohen Honors College faculty to speak with Dr. Muma,  The event will be held on zoom, and the zoom information will be available in the weekly update.

February 12th at 2pm there will be a virtual town hall with President Rick Muma. This is a special opportunity for Cohen Honors College students to speak with Dr. Muma, ask questions, and voice concerns. The event will be held on zoom, and the zoom information will be available in the weekly update. 

February 15th- Cohen Enhancement Scholarship APPLICATION DEADLINE

The Cohen Enhancement Scholarship Feb 1st deadline has been extended to February 15th.

A generous gift from Dorothy and Bill Cohen allows the Cohen Honors College to fulfill its mission of joining knowledge and innovation to grow visionaries. Cohen Enhancement Scholarships of up to $4000 support current Honors students in activities such as study abroad, National Student Exchange, unpaid internships, national conferences, undergraduate research or service learning

February 15th- Outstanding Cohen Honors student award DEADLINE

Eligibility Requirements 

  • Graduating senior who has completed at least 90 credit hours by the end of the summer prior to award being selected
  • Active standing in Honors including a minimum 3.25 overall GPA

Selection Will Be Based on the Following 

  • Involvement at 黑洞社区 and with the Cohen Honors College
  • Leadership
  • Contribution and service to the surrounding community
  • Demonstrated success in Honors courses

February 23rd- Honors Option Agreement SUBMISSION DEADLINE

Turn a regular course into an Honors course with an Honors option agreement. In any course with a fulltime faculty instructor, you may request to earn Honors credit. Examples of work completed to earn Honors credit include:

  • Apply in-class knowledge to real-world experience: Research current labor conditions for stagehands, and volunteer for backstage work in a local performance during a Fine Arts course. Write a research and reflection paper.
  • Further studies: Read additional primary source materials, solve additional problems, or extend course material in some way that will contribute to the depth of knowledge about the discipline. Share the research or application of knowledge with the instructor and the class.
  • Research: Assist the professor with a small part of current research; learn the skills needed to understand plant morphology or to engage in teacher research; prepare for an application for an undergraduate student research grant.
