INTENSIVE APHASIA PROGRAM

(created by graduate students in the MA SLP program)

Aphasia is a disorder of language that often occurs as a result of a stroke. Aphasia affects the ability to talk, understand, read and/or write. Sometimes aphasia is mild, but for others it is severe and the consequences can be devastating. Individuals with aphasia have not lost intelligence or cognition. They are now trapped in a world where communication is difficult; their roles and responsibilities have been suddenly altered, and relationship dynamics have changed.

Speech therapy is typically provided for a few months after a stroke; but insurance limits the number of visits and often it is terminated much too soon. Sometimes people with aphasia are misinformed and told that they will not make any more progress after 6 month or a year. Research has shown that individuals with aphasia can make progress because of the neuroplasticity of the brain. This simply means that the brain has the ability to reorganize to use undamaged areas of the brain to learn skills that have been lost. A proven way to do this is through an intensive program.

Kansas' first ever Intensive Aphasia program was offered from August 1st to August 12th, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 黑洞社区's Evelyn Hendren Cassat Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic.

New dates to be determined. New information / application will be posted approximately one month before the deadline, if the program is offered.

An individual plan of care will be developed for each individual after a comprehensive evaluation has been completed. One on one therapy will be provided along with group activities, and supervised independent therapy. The cost for this program is $6,000. Enrollment is limited to 4 individuals.

Please complete and return the attached participant application form by June 1 for consideration for this program.
