- Leather Hiking Boots (NO cowboy boots): important considerations when purchasing boots:
- High ankle support - to help stabilize you hiking with backpack
- Full leather boot recommended - provides most protection and water resistance
- Thick tread - to grip uneven ground
- Break-in period - purchase boots a few weeks before camp to soften leather
- Purchase from walk-in store so you can test boots before purchase; example retailers in Wichita include Sierra, Cabelas, Backwoods, REI, etc
- Backpack: important considerations when purchasing backpacks:
- Internal Frame Pack; NO external frame packs
- Pack volume around 2200cu inches (~36 liters)
- Ultralight packs are too light for our use
- Hip belt needed to distribute weight
- Example retailers include Sierra, Cabelas, Backwoods, REI, etc
- Belt - for strapping notebook pouch, hammer, and Brunton compass (compass supplied by camp)
- Nalgene bottles, Camelbacks, etc.

The department provides tents for 2-person accommodation. Please do not bring your tent unless otherwise directed. Space is limited at some campsites.
