Goal 6: Identify new and emerging academic programming
- Departments and faculty across campus regularly assess their curricular offerings to determine if their graduates are prepared for success following graduation. Four new degrees have been approved by KBOR as a result of departments and colleges exploring new programs in response to changing needs in our community. These include: Bachelor of Arts in Applied Linguistics, Master of Science in Data Science in Engineering, Master of Science in Business Analytics, and Master of Science in Mathematical Foundations of Data Analysis.
- In addition, four proposals were approved as part of the convergence science initiative this year: Smart fusion material research; data-enabled disaster resilience; reducing obesity among vulnerable populations; and creating educational technologies to assist refugee learners. These projects will engage graduate and undergraduate students on campus.
Recruitment and Retention Tips:
- When traveling, considering visiting a local campus to learn about potential new practices being adopted in your area that you could bring back to campus.
- Engage alumni by creating an Advisory Panel/Council to provide support and recommendations to the department to stay in touch with the latest industry trends.
SEM Shout Outs:
- To Dr. Marche Fleming-Randle and Major Eric Hollingsworth (ROTC) for their leadership and support of the Army ROTC leadership program. This program saw continued growth this year after its launch in 2019.
- To the faculty in the Management department in the Barton School for the continued growth of their Masters in Human Resource Management (MHRM), with over 40 new students enrolled a year after its inception. The department offers a number of human resource management badges that they are leveraging to attract additional students to the program.
- To the Teachers Apprentice Program and Bachelor of Applied Arts in Media Arts that continue to see growth for the fourth year in a row.
- To all of those involved in the creation of the three new Analytics programs: This was a big effort between departments in the College of Engineering, the Barton School, and the Fairmount College.

Managers of USS and Non-Teaching UP Employees: Your signature is needed
Managers of USS and non-teaching UP employees should log in to myPerformance (in my黑洞社区) to submit electronic signatures for 2020-2021 evaluations by March 14.
Helpful Hint: The Manager Signature (Step 5) will not be available if the Employee Signature (Step 4 due March 7, 2021) was not completed. Once the employee signs and submits their evaluation, you should have access to the Manager Signature (Step 5).
Note: myPerformance Evaluations are available for 2021-2022 competency and goal planning. Managers should add expectations, competencies, and goals for the 2021-2022 review period, then meet with their employees to review and provide them hard copies of their evaluation for reference throughout the year. Competency and goal planning should be completed by March 31.

UP & USS joint senate meeting set for March 16
The UP and USS Senates joint meeting will be held Tuesday, March 16 at 9:30 a.m. via Zoom. Please note, the joint senate meeting times have been adjusted to 9:30-11 a.m. All meetings are open to the campus community. The Shocker Store is taking regalia rental orders from faculty and staff members who are planning on attending the spring 2021 commencement. The deadline to place your rental order is 4 p.m. Friday, April 9. If you would like to purchase custom academic regalia, the deadline is 4 p.m. Friday, March 12. Payment is due when order is placed. Headshot appointments available for March
The Office of Strategic Communications offers headshots for Wichita State faculty and staff at no charge. For the 2021 spring semester, headshot events will be scheduled once a month over two days in the Rhatigan Student Center.

Applications open for Shocker Leadership Awards
Applications for the ninth Shocker Leadership Awards are now open. The Annual Shocker Leadership Awards are a way to recognize the work of student-led organizations, students, faculty and staff at 黑洞社区. Recognized student organizations, university affiliated student groups and individuals may be nominated by a student, faculty member, staff member, or organization; or students may nominate themselves for one of the awards. One application form must be completed for every award for which one wishes to be considered. A nomination must have all parts to be considered by the selection committee. Nominations are due Friday, April 9 at 11:59 p.m.
If you would like to nominate someone on their behalf for an awards, please note that it is the responsibility of the nominator to turn in a complete packet. The nominee (unless they are nominating themselves) would not be responsible for uploading the applications. In search of First Year Seminar instructors
We are looking for faculty and instructors who are interested in teaching a First-Year Seminar class in the spring 2022 semester. If you would like to learn more about creating and teaching an FYS class for students at Wichita State, visit our information session at 1 p.m. March 15. ()

Seeking Collegiate Leadership Competition judges
We are seeking two judges for the Collegiate Leadership Competition.
Collegiate Leadership Competition (CLC), a nonprofit founded in 2015, creates a digital practice field where students can actively apply what they learn via CLC鈥檚 global virtual competition. CLC makes leadership a tangible, high-impact learning experience for future leaders. We are asking you to serve as a judge for the competition.
When/Time Commitment: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 10, 2021
- One hour of pre-work ahead of the April 10 meeting
- 8-9 a.m.: Judge training 鈥 everything you need to know (required)
- 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 鈥 Judging two 90-minute activities (required)
Where: All activities will be conducted over Zoom. You can wear pajama pants while you judge leadership.

Faculty Senate: Call for nominations
Nominations are now being accepted for two university-wide at-large seats for the Faculty Senate to serve a two-year term starting in the 2021-22 academic year. University-wide at-large Senators represent the faculty of the entire university, not just a specific college or division. The Senate meets twice a month during the regular academic year from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of the month.
All faculty are eligible for nominations including current senators whose term expires this year. Please submit your nominations to Lee Ann Birdwell at leeann.birdwell@wichita.edu before midnight on Wednesday, March 10. Self-nominations are strongly encouraged. Your participation is essential to a fair and inclusive process of shared governance.
OAT summer grant apps due
The Open/Alternative Textbook (OAT) initiative is designed to promote, incentivize, and grow the use of freely available resources in Wichita State classes to reduce the economic impact of textbook costs on the student body.
The OAT Grant Program provides $2,000-5,000 grants to faculty who apply for the grant to redesign a course with no-cost resources, or to write or contribute to an open educational resource, or other alternative text that can be provided to the students free of charge. These grants are funded by SEM and the course fees.
KBOR is offering Open Educational Resource workshops on March 12, 23, April 1, and April 14.

Outdoor heaters placed outside RSC
黑洞社区, Student Involvement and the Kansas Leadership Center have joined together along with thousands of other Kansans for the Kansas Beats the Virus campaign. The campaign brought together thousands of Kansans to find creative solutions to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Student Involvement was awarded a grant to purchase outdoor heaters to be placed outside the RSC to provide Shockers with an opportunity to enjoy the heaters while still maintaining social distancing guidelines. During these chilly spring mornings, we invite our students, staff, and faculty to stop by and warm up under these heaters, which will be placed on the north patio of the RSC throughout the month of March.
Heaters are also available for use for 黑洞社区 groups and organizations to use. For more questions about using heaters for one of your events contact Letsmeet@wichita.edu.

Ulrich series features ADCI faculty
Join the Ulrich Museum of Art virtually at 10 a.m. today for the latest in the series of talks with faculty artists featured in the current exhibition, The XXIII Faculty Biennial: It's All Part of the Process. This time around, the Department of Art, Design and Creative Industries' Barry Badgett, associate professor of sculpture media, and Robert Bubp, foundations coordinator and associate professor of painting and drawing, will pair up to talk about their thoughts on artistic process. The Faculty Biennial exhibition is on display at the Ulrich Museum of Art on the Wichita State University campus until May 8. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closed Sundays and university and major holidays. Safe self-distancing practices are observed. Admission is always free.

CEI鈥檚 Work Aids in creation of maternal depression screening policy
The Community Engagement Institute (CEI) has worked with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) over the past two years to oversee a Maternal Depression Screening (MDS) Workgroup with the aim to help improve perinatal behavioral healthcare in the state of Kansas.
Efforts of the group included work on an environmental scan, a , and drafting an impact paper which was used to demonstrate necessity of a Kansas Maternal Depression Screening Policy. These endeavors led to the establishment of an that expands the number of screenings and allowable provider types who can be reimbursed for maternal depression screenings using a validated and evidence-based tool under both the mother and child鈥檚 Medicaid.
This policy reflects the growing momentum to prioritize the mental health and wellness of our communities and a recognition of the need for integrated and accessible behavioral healthcare to improve maternal mental health outcomes in the state.
Devereaux named finalist for Ostrom Prize
The article 鈥淕ive Us a Little Social Credit: To Design or To Discover Personal Ratings in the Era of Big Data" by Dr. Abigail Devereaux and her co-author Linan Peng, was recently named as a finalist for the Elinor Ostrom Prize. Devereaux is an assistant professor of economics in the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State.
The Elinor Ostrom Prize is awarded each year for the best full-length article published in Journal of Institutional Economics in the preceding calendar year. The prize competition will be judged by an international committee of experts in the field of institutional research with the winner being named in August 2021.
