FEATURED STORIES

Speaking freely on freedom of expression; 3-4:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2021; Format: virtual; www.wichita.edu/speakingfreelyWichita State to hold panel discussion on freedom of expression

Free expression is a fundamental value for an institution such as 黑洞社区, Neal Allen, associate professor of political science, maintains.

鈥淲e owe all of our students, and all Kansas citizens that we serve, our best effort to include all points of view,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 believe that democratic government depends on having both involved citizens and trained professionals.鈥

The open exchange of ideas may not produce a tidy ending.

That exchange, however, is crucial to our nation鈥檚 discourse, no matter how difficult the conversation. 黑洞社区 recognizes the important role universities play and will present a virtual panel on Freedom of Expression from 3-4:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 31.

The Ulrich Museum of Art on the 黑洞社区 campus is giving away free basketballs to congratulate the Shockers and new Head Coach Isaac Brown on a remarkable season in the face of adversity, ending the regular season as American Athletic Conference champs and heading into March Madness with tons of momentum.

The basketballs were part of a planned exhibition, 鈥淭o the Hoop: Basketball and Contemporary Art,鈥 which was supposed to be on display at the Ulrich last Fall, but had to be canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. We are now in the process of distributing those basketballs among our local community. If you would like one, drop by, check out the exhibitions in the galleries, (gallery hours: Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., always free), or take a stroll among some of the nearby sculptures in our world-class Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection, which is always open and always free.

Ulrich Virtual to host Kansas photographer Doug Barrett

Photographer, videographer, and journalist Doug Barrett uses his camera to document our contemporary struggles with social justice in Kansas and the U.S. Inspired by the work of legendary photographer (and Ft. Scott, Kansas-native) Gordon Parks, Barrett, who is based out of Manhattan, Kansas, has focused recent projects on the protests following the death of George Floyd, the Mexico border wall, homeless veterans in the U.S., and Yuma Street in Manhattan, Kansas, among others.

Barrett will be the Ulrich Museum of Art's guest for a virtual talk titled "Weapons of Choice" at 6 p.m. today. The talk is free and open to all, but registration is required to get the Zoom link.

You can also catch Barrett on the Ulrich website leading a video tour of the current exhibition, "Gordon Parks: I, too, am America." Not only does Barrett comment in-depth on some of the Parks photographs, he also shares several of his own.

Barrett's photographs have been published in Bloomberg News, TIME Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, Washington Post, New Territory Magazine, The Pointe Magazine, and featured on the Nasdaq billboard in Times Square, VICE, Fox News, and BBC World News.
