Teaching This Fall: Day 10 Questions about Accessibility and Applied Learning
To support instructors who are prepping their classes for fall, the Faculty Curricular Design Working Group has created 10 sets of featured questions related to our new teaching environment. Each day we will post one set of frequently asked questions to respond to issues that faculty have raised about how to be prepared.
FAQs Set #10: Questions about Accessibility and Applied Learning
- What accessibility issues do I need to consider in my online course design?
Content developed for one-time delivery in remote formats that is NOT planned for reuse is not required to meet the same accessibility standards that IIE (fully online) courses must meet, but they must meet the accommodation needs (as determined by the Office of Disability Services) of all students who are enrolled in the class at the time of delivery. More details are available here.
- How do we manage applied learning and research experiences in the age of COVID-19?
Applied learning is an essential component of our mission. This traditionally involves working side by side with established professionals in a students鈥 desired degree field before graduation. As we consider placement of students in applied learning activities off-campus during the pandemic, first and foremost, 黑洞社区 will follow public health recommendations and county mandates because the safety of our Shocker learning community is our top priority. .

Child participants needed for online study on COVID-19
Researchers at 黑洞社区, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, are doing an online research study to see what 10-17 year-old children think about COVID-19 and what they think about their parents' beliefs and behaviors during this time.
When children complete the survey, their family will be entered into a raffle for a $10 gift card. We hope about 250 children complete our survey, and we will raffle 50 of the gift cards. If you have a child living in your home who is 10-17 years old, your child might be eligible for this study.
If you are interested in learning more about being in this study, please copy and paste the link below into your browser:
If you have any questions, please contact Samantha Gregus, Ph.D., at samantha.gregus@wichita.edu.
Harpool quoted in Forbes
Dorothy Harpool
Dorothy Harpool, a senior marketing lecturer and the director of student and community initiatives in the W. Frank Barton School of Business, was recently quoted in a story 鈥淒on鈥檛 Get Ripped Off At The Car Rental Counter,鈥 in Forbes.
Harpool said: 鈥淭hese are profit centers for car rental companies, and rental agents are often incentivized to sell these products,鈥 says Dorothy Harpool, a senior marketing lecturer and the director of student and community initiatives in Wichita State鈥檚 W. Frank Barton School of Business. 鈥淐ustomers should be ready to make decisions on each of these before visiting the counter to assure they make a rational decision instead of an emotional one.鈥
