CONSTRUCTION / MAINTENANCE

Gas line replacement

Main gas line replacement project begins today

Please be advised that Kansas Gas Service (KGS) will be starting a main gas line replacement project through the Yale Pedestrian Mall today (Tuesday, June 9). See the map above, marked with magenta-colored locate zones, for illustration of the affected work areas that are between the northeast corner of the Rhatigan Student Center and the intersection of 21st Street and Yale Ave. The section of gas line that runs north-south in the area between Shocker Hall and Hubbard Hall was replaced with the Shocker Hall construction project in 2014, so that zone will be unaffected by this work.

Work will predominantly involve horizontal boring of a new eight-inch gas line without disruptive trenching, but there will be random spots with waterjet pothole excavations of underground utilities for bore positioning and assured line clearances, and, of course, excavations for equipment setup at the bore route inlets and exits. The KGS contractor will repair and re-sod yard work areas, and will repave or fill pavement cuts and pothole drillings at the completion of the line installation work.

The gas line being replaced is an eight-inch shallow medium pressure black steel line that has needed replacement for many years, and now is a very advantageous time to replace it, given the reduced campus populations expected this summer.

The work is expected to last three-to-four weeks, and the contractors will strive to keep pedestrian areas open for safe passage around their work zones.
