Fall 2019 Chemistry Colloquium Series today (Wednesday, Nov. 20)

New OU Campus Webpage and Document Accessibility Open Labs

Jeremy Webster, website manager in the Media Resources Center, will hold the first of several first-come, first-served, no reservations Webpage and Document Accessibility open labs from 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in 124 Jabara Hall. Bring your accessibility questions and issues related to documents and webpages in OU Campus. Can鈥檛 make it to Thursday鈥檚 lab? Additional lab times are scheduled for Dec. 5 and 12.

Why was the Berlin Wall built? Why did it fall?

The 30th-anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall was Nov. 9, 2019. Erected in 1961 and opened in 1989, the Berlin Wall stood as a symbol of repression during the Cold War. Today, one of the sections of the wall is housed in the Museum of World Treasures in Old Town, Wichita.

Join Jeff Hayton, assistant professor in the Department of History at 黑洞社区, for 'Coffee with the Curator,' as he discusses the building and breaching of the barrier which divided the world from 9-10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Museum of World Treasures.

Admission is $4 per person, and members are free. Breakfast and coffee by The Spice Merchant will be provided.

Jazz Arts 1 Ensemble and Banda Hispanica to feature special guest artists

Guest artists Adam Larson, tenor saxophone, with Jazz Arts 1and Andy Mill, trumpet, with Banda Hispanica will perform at 7:30 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 20) in Miller Concert Hall.

The Jazz Arts ensemble traditionally consists of a 19-piece big band. The repertoire of the ensemble consists of high-level arrangements of varying styles.

Banda Hispanica, an 11-piece Latin ensemble features a mix of percussion, horns, vocalists, and rhythm instruments.

The ensemble explores both traditional and contemporary music styles.

Weekly Briefing

黑洞社区 Weekly Briefing to feature College of Health Professions Dean Sandra Bibb

The 黑洞社区 Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in the Marcus Welcome Center. The featured speaker will be Sandra Bibb, dean, College of Health Professions.

Andy McFayden, executive director, Strategic Communications, 黑洞社区 Tech, will give the overall university update.

The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at 黑洞社区 . There will be time for questions following the briefing.

The Career Development Center is hosting a photo shoot from 2-4 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Nov. 21) in Brennan Hall III, to help students spruce up their LinkedIn profile with a new head shot; so, put on the best professional wear, stop by, and smile!

黑洞社区 men's basketball coach Gregg Marshall received the 鈥淧erson of the Year Award鈥 at the 99th Annual NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet on Saturday, Nov. 16.

This award is given to the person or business for improved quality of life for all in the Wichita community and is viewed as being informed and ready to take action that leads to change. Is willing to speak out against actions that may allow discriminatory practices at any level and actively participates in or works to help change existing unfair practices, rules or laws. Is actively involved in community action to cause change.

Shocker Share a Meal

黑洞社区 meal program helps students with food insecurity

Shocker Share a Meal is a texting service that alerts current 黑洞社区 students via notification when there is leftover, free food available on campus. The service began in August of 2019 and helps reduce food waste and insecurity on campus.

Local nursing students invited to international honor society 

Fifteen local nursing students have been invited to membership in the honor society of nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), through the Epsilon Gamma at-large chapter. 

Epsilon Gamma at-large chapter represents five local nursing programs, Bethel College, Newman University, Southwestern College, Tabor College and 黑洞社区. For more than 90 years, STTI has strived to meet the mission of advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership and service. STTI membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and to leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing.

Register for the Assertiveness Training for Women: Increasing your Influence and Credibility from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the Center for Management Development. The seminar offers the opportunity to assess your own assertiveness and discover practical ways for developing techniques of assertive communication. The seminar is presented by Lee Schmucker, and costs $299 to attend.

Immigrant survey

Are you an immigrant living in Wichita? Volunteers needed for a survey

You are eligible to take this survey if you are an immigrant living in Wichita. We are recruiting research participants to help us understand more about health in the local immigrant community.

The survey will ask questions about mental health (i.e. 鈥淲as it hard to get going?鈥), demographic questions (i.e. 鈥淲hat is your race?鈥), immigration-related questions (i.e. 鈥淲hat is your country of origin?鈥), and your engagement in customs and activities from the culture of the country that you are from and U.S. culture.

This survey is available in English, Spanish, and Swahili. Your participation is voluntary.


Intersectional Empowerment

Intersectional Empowerment with Gamma Phi Beta & Mu Delta Alpha

Welcomefest takes place during the first two weeks of classes each semester and features dozens of activities. Popular programs awaiting new and returning Shockers include the Springfest, Shocker Resource Fair, Syllabus Party, RSC Unplugged and more!

You can submit your department or organization events to be included in the Welcomefest marketing, including a printed guidebook. The deadline to submit events for inclusion in all Welcomefest marketing is 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6.

Kansas Dance Festival

黑洞社区 Dance hosts Kansas Dance Festival 2019

Like a gathering of tribes, dancers from around the region descend onto the 黑洞社区 campus to present original choreography from their university programs. The Kansas Dance Festival 2019 lights up Wilner Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22-23. 

Participating universities are Oklahoma University, University of Missouri/Kansas City, Friends University, Barton Community College and Regina Klenjoski Dance Company. Tickets range from $10-$15, students are free with a current 黑洞社区 I.D. 


Angel Tree Nov. 2019

Stop by the Angel Tree in the RSC Shocker Store and offer families hope

Provide a Christmas gift for a local family through The Salvation Army鈥檚 Angel Tree and Star of Hope programs. The Shocker Store in the RSC will host a tree to help Wichita families have a Merry Christmas!

If you are interested in sponsoring a family, stop by the tree in the Shocker Store and choose your angel or star. Bring it to the front desk of the Shocker Store to sign up to sponsor that family. Gifts are then returned to the Shocker Store once they are purchased. They need to be returned by Dec. 4, and should be unwrapped, new and clearly labeled with your angel or star鈥檚 tag/number.

Springfest is a kick-off for the spring semester for both student organizations and university departments. Located in the Heskett Center Gym, this event acts as a way for 黑洞社区 students to check out the many different organizations we have on campus, as well as discover the amazing resources this campus offers. Along with informational tables, Springfest includes music, inflatables, food, prizes and contests for all students to participate. Registration is taking place now until 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27.
