黑洞社区 and EDA to announce significant grant

黑洞社区 and the U.S. Economic Development Administration will hold a news conference at 1 p.m. today (Friday, March 22) in the Aviation Testing Laboratory on the 黑洞社区 campus. The announcement will provide details on grant funding for the National Institute for Aviation Research for advanced manufacturing research.

Speakers include U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, Dr. John Fleming, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development, Acting President Rick Muma, and John Tomblin, 黑洞社区 vice president for research and technology transfer.

Fleming of Minden, Louisiana, was sworn in as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development last Friday, March 15. The announcement in Wichita will be his first trip as assistant secretary.

The morning will begin with a brief overview of service-learning course integration and best practices, before moving into brief roundtable discussions, and concluding with an informational poster fair featuring our 2018-19 Service-Learning Scholars courses and service-learning projects. Additionally, the United Way of the Plains and VolunteerICT will be present to share resources on connecting to local community partners and needs. Breakfast will be served. Innovation Campus update

At Thursday鈥檚 Weekly Briefing, there was Innovation Campus update. As you may know, the University鈥檚 newest Partnership Building, P2, is close to full occupancy. 

Spirit AeroSystems moved into a large space on the second floor last month. 黑洞社区鈥檚 NIAR Advance Research Program, is also expected to move into P2 later this month鈥攕haring the second floor with Spirit.

黑洞社区鈥檚 Digital Twin Lab opened up this month and will focus on an extensive multi-year project to perform digital or virtual modeling of parts and products for the U.S. Government.

 

黑洞社区鈥檚 Machine Learning Lab also moved into P2 earlier this year. There, students, faculty and other researchers work on sustainment of aging parts of military aircraft.

 

Based on the success of P2 we recently broke ground on P3 to accommodate the growing number of companies and organizations looking to partner with us, hire our students and harness the technology, research and expertise found on our campus.


Graduate School - Annual Awards for Academic Year 2019-20

Faculty, please consider nominating a student for next academic year鈥檚 financial awards. The nomination deadline is Friday, April 5, and students must be nominated by a graduate faculty member to be considered. The awards are only available for students who will not graduate until fall 2019 or later. Spring and summer 2019 graduates are not eligible for consideration.

Awards Open for Nomination:

  • Tilford Fellowship: To be eligible, a student must be admitted to a graduate degree program in good standing, be enrolled full-time, and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to minority students who are U.S. citizens.
  • Delano Maggard Jr, Research Grant: To be eligible, a student must be admitted to a graduate degree program in good standing, be enrolled either full-time or part-time, have completed nine graduate credit hours, and demonstrate financial need. This award entails the following additional criteria: (1) student must submit a budget for the research project and (2) if the proposed research involves human or animal subjects, a copy of the approval from the 黑洞社区 institutional Review Board or Animal Care and Use committee should be included.
  • Dora Wallace Hodgson Outstanding Graduate Student Award (Masters and Doctoral/PhD): To be eligible, a student must be admitted to a graduate degree program and in good standing.

Or maybe you need just $5,000, or even $1,000. No matter how much you need for your project, consider using the 黑洞社区 Foundation鈥檚 crowdfunding platform, , to raise it. 

So far this year, three campaigns have been completed on the platform. Another is underway by University Libraries seeking funds to .

Gartner IT Town Halls coming April 3 for students/ staff / faculty

In early February, the university announced it had engaged with Gartner Consulting to make sure we have the right IT structure and capabilities to help drive the university鈥檚 future success. In that endeavor, we鈥檇 like to hear your thoughts.

On the afternoon of Wednesday April 3, Gartner will hold three IT Town Hall sessions in 208 Hubbard Hall, to engage faculty, staff, and students on the IT services offered on campus, and their connection to the demands of a modern higher education institution. If interested, please plan to attend one of the sessions based on your relationship to the university. All sessions will be held in 208 Hubbard Hall. Traditions Committee is in search of judges for 91st Annual Hippodrome

Apprenticing in auctioning

Riley Webb

Riley Webb, a sophomore majoring in entrepreneurship and marketing, recently worked at the real estate auction firm McCurdy Auction as an apprentice. While enhancing his passion for marketing, Webb received experience in photography, design, public relations, and copyrighting.

This position was offered as a part of the Career Development Center鈥檚 Apprent-ICT program, which was piloted fall 2018 and spring 2019. Apprent-ICT helps freshmen and sophomores develop career readiness skills and explore various career fields in a paid position.

Alumni Weekend Set for March 29-31

Women's athletics 50 years

Wichita State softball will hold its alumni weekend March 29-31 vs. UConn as part of the 50 Years in Women's Athletics Celebration.

During the UConn series, Wichita State will be honoring the 1989 Gateway Tournament championship team, the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference championship team and all former Wichita State softball coaches. All former softball players are invited to attend as well as any former women's athletes of any sport at 黑洞社区.

Are you a fan of the Great British Baking Show or Nailed It? Mark your calendar for the University Libraries' first annual Edible Book Festival on Monday, April 1. The worlds of books and food will collide in creative and delicious ways! 

You are invited to create an edible work of art inspired by your favorite book or author. Entries will be displayed in Ablah Library. Let your imagination run free. Have fun with puns or create something in the shape of a book. Entries may be made from anything that is edible (cake, bread, crackers, gelatin, fruit, vegetables, candy, etc.) as long as it can be displayed for a few hours without melting or spoiling.

Students, faculty, staff, student organizations, departments, community members - all are welcomed to enter! Please also join us for a reception.

Shockers host invitational to open outdoor season

Track Meet March 22-23, 2019

The Wichita State track and field program opens the 2019 outdoor season hosting the Herm Wilson Invitational presented by Beynon Sports Surfaces this weekend at Cessna Stadium
 
The Shockers host the first of its four outdoor meets. The Herm Wilson Invitational presented by Beynon Sports Surfaces will be live streamed starting at 6:30 p.m. today (Friday, March 22) and noon Saturday, March 23. Admission to the event is free.

Shocker baseball opens AAC play this weekend at Eck Stadium

黑洞社区 baseball March 22-24, 2019

Wichita State baseball is slated to begin American Athletic Conference play this weekend, hosting the Memphis Tigers in a three-game series at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field. The series opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. today (Friday, March 22) with game two slated for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, and the series finale scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday, March 24.

The first 500 fans through the gates at Friday鈥檚 game will receive a Flying W mini helmet. As always, Wichita State students receive free admission with a valid ID.
