How much do you know about the 黑洞社区 Faculty / Staff Holiday Card Scholarship?

Holiday Card Scholarship 2018

Over 50 years ago, Dr. Nicholas Pronko, professor emeritus of psychology, came up with a unique fundraising idea for Wichita State. He called on faculty and staff to give the few dollars they normally would spend sending each other holiday cards to a scholarship benefiting 黑洞社区 students with financial need 鈥 and this became the .

Now, with more than 3,400 donations and nearly $82,000 contributed (and that鈥檚 just during the time we鈥檝e been able to track), it鈥檚 easy to see how successful Dr. Pronko鈥檚 vision has become. The endowed fund has grown to the point we are able to award up to four scholarships a year averaging more than $1,000 each. It is truly impacting the lives of 黑洞社区 students.

Unfortunately, support for what was once an important holiday tradition for 黑洞社区 faculty and staff has been declining over the past few years. With many loyal supporters having retired, and so many new employees, it鈥檚 easy to understand how this happened. This is a renewed appeal for you to help turn the tide. Whether this is the first you鈥檝e heard of the scholarship 鈥 or you鈥檝e supported it for years 鈥 please consider participating this year.

Visit the Holiday Card Endowed Scholarship Fund site by clicking . You鈥檒l be able to learn more about the scholarship and can even give a gift. If you鈥檙e unable to support financially, you can still make an impact by advocating for the scholarship and promoting it to your friends and colleagues. Your involvement at any level will make a difference.

If you have questions, or would like to learn more about ways you can support the , please contact Aaron Winter at the 黑洞社区 Foundation by emailing aaron.winter@wichita.edu or call 316-978-3803.

Happy holidays to all 鈥 and congratulations on another great year at 黑洞社区!

Quilt of Valor presented to member of staff, other heroes

Bill Molash

On Monday, Dec. 10, Elliott School of Communication senior administrative assistant Bill Molash and other service members received the Quilt of Valor, a civilian equivalent of the Purple Heart award. Molash served as a member of the Air Force during the Vietnam War, and was stationed at various air bases overseas.

The other recipients who received the honorary Quilt of Valor were Kevin Benavides, a current communications student at Wichita State who served in an active duty combat role; James Thompson, former candidate who ran for Kansas鈥 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, who served as a member of the Presidential Guard during the Gulf War; and Martin Garcia, who served in an active duty combat role in Afghanistan during the military campaign there.

The Quilts of Valor project traces its roots back to the Revolutionary War as a way for family members and fellow soldiers to cover wounded or deceased soldiers and loved ones on the battlefield, providing warmth and comfort. The quilts are marked with unique insignia, designed to highlight accomplishments and honorable traits of the soldiers, while also identifying their backgrounds and pieces of information about them.
