Academic Convocation Sept. 20, 2018

Academic Convocation will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in Wilner Auditorium. We are excited to welcome Bryan Stevenson, author of this year's 黑洞社区 Reads book, 鈥淛ust Mercy,鈥 for the book signing and speaker during convocation. The book signing and lite breakfast will be from 8-9:15 a.m. in the Ulrich Museum.

Wilner Auditorium seating will be reserved for 黑洞社区 students, faculty and staff. Wichita community members are encouraged to remain in the Ulrich Museum or go to the commons in Wilner to watch the streamed event.

Flu season is around the corner. Are you ready?

黑洞社区 HR Total Rewards team is once again hosting on-site flu shots, available to State of Kansas employees who are currently enrolled in medical insurance Plans A, J, Q, C, or N, as well as their covered spouse.

A total of three clinic dates have been scheduled on the 黑洞社区 main campus. If registration is closed for the clinic you prefer, or no appointments are available in the online scheduler, a limited number of walk-in appointments will be accepted each day. Please note that walk-in appointments may experience longer wait times.

8 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, in 142 RSC (Online scheduler closes Thursday, Sept. 13)

黑洞社区 Weekly Briefing

Wichita State student Jared Goering will share his firsthand applied learning experience and the TechCrunch competition in 黑洞社区's Weekly Briefing at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in the Marcus Welcome Center.

Zach Gearhart, director of government relations, will give the overall university update.

The Physics Seminar Series continues at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 12), in 128 Jabara Hall. James Ho, 黑洞社区 professor emeritus, presenting 鈥淎pplied Physics in the Medical Field.鈥 Refreshments and discussion will follow the talk.

Abstract: Medical or health-care field has a high growth potential now and in the foreseea-ble future. Its impact on economy and job market is beyond any doubt. Many sensors, devices and procedures in medical diagnosis and therapy are closely related to physics. But in order to successfully apply basic science to product-oriented technology, one has to take interdiscipli-nary approaches and overcome fiscal and legal challenges along the way. Developing weakly paramagnetic, thus MRI-compatible, titanium aneurysm-clips for brain surgery will be de-scribed as an example in the talk.

Gisuk Hwang in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, will present 鈥淭ailored Thermal Transport Phenomena in Gas-Filled Heterogeneous Nanostructures for Nano Thermal Diode and Switch.鈥 This Chemistry Colloquium will meet at 3:30 p.m. today (Wednesday, Sept. 12) in 224 McKinley Hall.

Learn how officiating can be a lucrative business

John Blazek officiating Sept. 20, 2018

As a Wichita State alumnus, John Blazek got his start in officiating through 黑洞社区 intramurals. He is currently the NCAA Division II National Coordinator of Men's Basketball Officials and the Supervisor of Officials for the KCAC and KJCCC. 

Blazek will discuss that officiating is a business, not a hobby, and that the business is entirely centered around people. Learn all about how to make officiating a lucrative business from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in 105 Heskett Center.


Community Engagement Institute produces suicide prevention announcement

Suicide Prevention PSA

Every September is an opportunity to raise awareness around suicide prevention and mental health, and ensure that tools for a healthy, happy life are readily available for everyone. The Community Engagement Institute's  were honored to create Kansas' 2018 Suicide Prevention PSA (public service announcement) for the .

This suicide prevention PSA was made possible by the volunteers who gave their time, energy and creativity to ensure that it represented the experiences of many. It is a reminder to take a moment to check on each other, to notice one another's struggles, and to go out of our way to make one another feel seen.

In support of Suicide Prevention Awareness week, individuals have the opportunity to speak about their stories and experiences about how suicide has impacted their lives.

Have an idea? E-Launch is for you

E-Launch September 2018

E-Launch has been developed to foster entrepreneurial activity that will lead to the commercialization of technology-based ideas. Starting Tuesday, Sept. 25 and Friday, Sept. 28, E-Launch sessions will be offered on Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m. and on Fridays from 1-4 p.m.

Through an interactive process, participants will learn to clearly conceptualize how the product or service can provide real value to customers. Participants will be shown how to validate their value proposition with customers and other stakeholders. In addition, the program will assist in the development of a business model that will deliver the value proposition to customers and provide a framework and methodology to create a viable startup company.

Thanks to the efforts of Joey Fonkert and Quinn Hall from Strategic Communications, the admissions team makes nearly all of its professional publications available for viewing at wichita.edu/publications. The initial listing of the publications is provided through a university site, but ultimately the brochures are posted through an easy-to-browse website, Issuu. It's a great resource if you're trying to find information about academic colleges, scholarships, other topic-specific brochures or general university information.
