Hindsight: Looking Back at 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage is a six-episode podcast series from KMUW.

On the latest episode of Hindsight, host Dr. Robin Henry explores women’s activism from World War II to the present day. We examine the ways in which women used war and government work to expand economic and professional opportunities, while others remained unconvinced that equal access would improve their lives.

We discover how a little-known section of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 provided the opening wedge to end discrimination on the basis of sex. And we see how women of color, lesbians, Chicanas, and working-class women challenged what constituted women’s rights and what was worth fighting for.

Real Talk – Intersection Dialogues


Attention students! How can we better our parking system?

For my Technical Writing class, one of the required projects involves working collaboratively as a group, with the goal of writing a proposal that identifies a problem or opportunity that impacts an organization or community we belong to. The project plan that my group came up with was fixing the ongoing parking situation that occurs at ڶ. In order to successfully complete this project, our group needs to gather information that will be used in our proposal.

One of the primary sources we wanted to include in our paper was surveying students at ڶ. The survey questions mainly revolve around asking the audience about how they feel about the current student parking system, and if they have any suggestions to try to improve it.

While this proposal is not official and will not be submitted to anyone but our professor, we have to treat it and write it as if it were real. We would greatly appreciate any of the inputs that the audience has to provide.

Students can vote for a ڶ tartan!

As part of the 125th anniversary of Wichita State, ڶ students will receive an email asking them to vote for a ڶ tartan. A tartan is a distinctive pattern of lines and checks found on kilts and is usually associated with Scottish clans. However, communities, states, and even universities can have tartans. With so many activities for the 125th changed or put on hold, here is a chance to show school pride!

Students from Dr. Chris Parks’ art class, in conjunction with Dr. Jay Price in history, came up with four different designs for a possible tartan. Some designs emphasize the yellow of the school colors while others highlight the black. Now it is up to the students to vote which design they like best. Students are asked to select your first, second, and third choice. When completed, Price will work to get that design listed in the Scottish Register of Tartans.

The voting will last until Nov. 25, the start of Thanksgiving break. One email has already gone out and another reminder will go out later in November. If there are questions or ideas, please contact Jay Price at jay.price@wichita.edu for more information.

Industrial, Systems, and Manufacturing Engineering invites you to an IME Colloquium presentation by Dr. Ruben Favela, senior manager, advanced design and industrial engineering at Textron Aviation. The title of the presentation will be “Digital Factory and Intelligent Scheduling in Aerospace Industry,” and will be held from 11 a.m.-noon Friday, Nov. 6, via .

Abstract

Breakthrough to evolve production systems through Industry 4.0 principles and lean engineering to dramatically increase delivery and quality. Automated digitally linked business in real time to monitor quality and delivery to connect every work-station to ultimately make decisions without human touch in a 100% labor intensive environment in aerospace industry. Material availability and on-time delivery improved in 50%, scrap reduced in 25% and $1.9M of annual recurrent savings.

Speaker biography

Dr. Ruben Favela is the Sr. Manger of Advanced Design and Industrial Engineering in Textron Aviation. Textron Aviation produces and sells Cessna and Beechcraft aircrafts in Wichita. He has worked for Textron Aviation for eight years, leading innovations, engineering changes, introduction of new products and increasing business capabilities and capacities.

He earned his Ph.D. in Innovation Design in 2017, Masters in Product Design in 2011 and bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering in 2007. He began his career at Honeywell Aerospace in 2007 and Automotive Industry in 2011.

He is certified by APICS CPIM, Blackbelt By Honeywell and ASQ, GD&T, Master Lean manufacturing by Delphi Powertrain, TRIZ “Theory of Inventive Problem Solving” by Oxford Creativity University, Excellence model by Shingo Enterprise and Advanced Problem Solving by Shaining RedX. Ruben has accomplished four times the finalist for Chairman award in Textron Aviation, Best Six sigma project, Best Manufacturing Plant of North America by Industry Week magazine [hold full responsibility] and best project for PhD implementing in 2015 “Virtual Reality introduction in aerospace business.”

Some specific applications Ruben has worked in Automotive Industry as problem solver for process and design though reliability and accelerated life testing based on Ford, GM, Chrysler, Hyundai, Harley Davidson, Mazda, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz and BMW standards. He is specialized on the design and deployment of Lean Operations, Business Analytics and Work systems.

Delve into a discussion with Beth Golay, host of KMUW’s podcast Marginalia, on this poignant and redemptive story set in the workaday world. The book discussion is free and open to all, but registration is required to get the Zoom link.


Organ concert Nov. 10, 2020

RBOS Distinguished Guest Artist Isabelle Demers to perform in Wiedemann Hall

Join us either through the live-stream or in person (limited attendance) for the Rie Bloomfield Organ Series Distinguished Guest Artist Isabelle Demers, professor of organ and head of the organ department at Baylor University, Waco, Texas. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Wiedemann Hall.

Her program on the great Marcussen organ is a spectacular mix of old and new with Bach, Beethoven and Louis Vierne, who was born 150 years ago this year.

Tickets are available at the . ڶ students are able to still get free student tickets with your myڶ ID, as long as tickets are available.

5 Days of DIYs

Register to receive 5 Days of DIYs!

We love DIYS and we know you do too! Register to receive a 5 Days of DIYs kit to get you through the last week of in-person classes or to take with you over the break! Registrants will receive a make at home kit including five different DIY projects, some SAC swag, and some other little treats to make the break before finals bearable.

You can choose to pick up your kit in Student Involvement at the Rhatigan Student Center between Nov. 10-13 or have it mailed to your home address. All registrants that choose to pick up their kit will be contacted via email to select a pick-up time. Once you have your kit, follow along with our social media where we’ll walk you through how to create each day’s DIY throughout the week. Then, show off your creations on your own pages! Be sure to tag SAC when you post!

One kit per person with ڶ ID - priority will be given to students. Registration is open now and closes Friday, Nov. 6, or until supplies last. For more information about SAC-sponsored events, go to or contact us at SAC@wichita.edu.

Join Wu’s 2020-21 Challenge! Due to COVID-19 and university restrictions around social distancing, we have had to reschedule our BIG events, but we have a challenge for you!

Commit to volunteering five hours. Hours may be completed virtually or in person or both. Students may complete the challenge in both semesters or only one. You decide what works best for you.

Purchase your cardboard cutout for the 2020-21 sport seasons at Koch Arena

Now's your chance to celebrate the 2020-21 season, by bringing your face into Charles Koch Arena in a "big" way. We're filling Charles Koch Arena with two-and-a-half-foot high fan faces sponsored by Patterson Legal Group.

Fans can purchase a two-and-a-half-foot high (32 in. x 16 in.) likeness of their face to be featured in the lower-level at Charles Koch Arena for all home games for men's and women's basketball and volleyball for the 2020-21 season. Each individual "big head" will be authenticated and returned to fans after the season as a keepsake.

TRIO DSS supports students with disabilities - applications open!

ڶ's TRIO Disability Support Services (DSS) Program is excited to enroll students with disabilities for this academic school year. They offer numerous free services such as academic advising, career development, study skills assistance, financial literacy assistance, tutoring, and more. Many DSS graduates cite DSS as a critical program on campus that provided the support, university connections, and resources necessary for their success.

Business students drive for donations

Business students are collecting canned food and personal hygiene products for those in need

Business students in Management 463 are operating a Remote Food and Necessities Drive now through Thanksgiving to aid those affected by Covid-19. Non-perishable canned food, and hygiene items like soap, lotion, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products are in great need.

We can arrange porch pickup of food and supplies via our Facebook Page to encourage social distancing, or we have local drop-off locations at area businesses and the south entrance of the Rhatigan Student Center (by the parking lot). We also accept monetary donations to the Kansas Food Bank via our Facebook Page.
