黑洞社区 is closed today (Wednesday, Dec. 5) in observance of the National Day of Mourning for President George H.W. Bush. The university will resume classes and normal operations tomorrow (Thursday, Dec. 6).

When the 黑洞社区 baseball team won the College World Series in 1989, the team was honored by President George H.W. Bush at the White House. The picture above is courtesy of 黑洞社区 Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives.

President Bush died on Nov. 30, and the university is closed today (Wednesday, Dec. 5) in honor of his service.


Call for Fiscal Year 2020 Educational Opportunity and Student Fee funding requests

It's again time to begin the process for submission of funding requests through Student Government for the Educational Opportunity Fund and Student Services Fee for FY 20. Through student fees, these programs provide funding for financial assistance to students (Educational Opportunity Fund) or the funding of programs / activities delivered directly to students (student fees).

If you've submitted requests in the past, the Budget / Review Officer should have received an email from the Budget Office last week to kick-off the submission process. If you have not submitted requests in the past, but are considering submitting a new request, please contact Lauren Smith, Jason Post, or David Miller in the Budget Office at 978-3030 for more information.

Requests are due no later than Friday, Jan. 25.


LAS Scholarships for 2019/20

The Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites all LAS students planning on continuing their education at 黑洞社区 in the 2019/20 academic year to fill out an LAS General Scholarship application at LAS Scholarship Application.

The application deadline is Friday, Feb. 1, 2019.


Invitation to SBIR/STTR Innovation Summit on Dec. 12

Learn how to access non-dilutive funding and meet one-on-one with SBIR experts from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, in 264 Experiential Engineering Building.

This workshop begins with an overview of the SBIR program, and how it differs from the STTR program. After covering recent and pending changes in SBIR/STTR, the discussion turns to a recommended process for developing a competitive Phase I proposal to any agency.

If you think you already know the Greenwoods' four-step process, come hear their new process which now entails seven steps. Each attendee also will be eligible for a free review of their Phase I proposal.

The cost of the event, including lunch, is $25 for general admission and $5 for 黑洞社区 students. This event is open to the public.

黑洞社区 Weekly Briefing to feature Anand Desai, dean, W. Frank Barton School of Business

Weekly Briefing

The 黑洞社区 Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Marcus Welcome Center.

Anand Desai, dean of the W. Frank Barton School of Business, will discuss the impact the student referendum will have on all 黑洞社区 students.

Tracee Friess, director of communications for research and technology transfer, will provide an overall university update.

The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at . There will be time for questions following the briefing.


Chili Cook-off and Student Appreciation Day tomorrow (Thursday, Dec. 6)

The Human Performance Studies Department invites students, faculty and staff to its Chili Cook-off and Student Appreciation Day from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Dec. 6) in the Heskett Center lobby.

Sample some great chili, vote for your favorite overall favorite and see which student and which faculty / staff wins the Judges' Choice Award.

Bring a minimum of one nonperishable food item for a local food bank or a $2 donation, and join us for a great treat.

Door prizes also will be given away.

Graduate students are invited to celebrate the end of the semester with a fun party from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at the Ulrich Museum of Art, 黑洞社区's modern and contemporary art museum.

Enjoy plentiful free hors d'oeuvres and beverages, including adult beverages, with ID. Unwind with friends and faculty, and enjoy viewing the wonderful exhibits on display.

The Shocker Store in the RSC will be closed today (Wednesday, Dec. 5), but the Braeburn Square Store will have normal hours.

RSC Unplugged has been moved to 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the RSC Starbucks Lounge. 


Shuttle Bus schedule update

Shuttle Buses

The shuttle buses at 黑洞社区 will not run Friday, Dec. 7. Shuttle bus service will start at 6:30 a.m. during finals week, Monday, Dec. 10- Thursday, Dec. 13.

Shuttle service will be discontinued from Friday, Dec. 14, through Monday, Jan. 21.


Parking update for Study Day and Finals Week

On Friday, Dec. 7, 100 stalls in lot 19E on the east side of Eck Stadium, will be blocked for a luncheon event at Marcus Welcome Center until 2 p.m.

This is also Study Day and ePermits will not be required in the green or green / yellow lots only.

During Finals Week from Saturday, Dec. 8, to Thursday, Dec. 13, parking will be enforced as usual.

Mortar Board looking to add new individuals

The Fairmount Chapter of Mortar Board is currently looking to add new individuals to the organization for the year of 2019-20. Mortar Board is Wichita State's exclusive honor society here on campus with ideals in Scholarship, Leadership and Service.

Mortar Board provides high achieving students, in said ideals, a chance to improve on their networking skills, community service experience and a chance to interact with other high achieving students here on campus. In addition, you have the opportunity to earn regalia (cords, stoles, medals) to wear at graduation!

Shocker Philosophy Conference call for papers

Submit your best philosophy paper to our local student philosophy conference! It's an excellent opportunity to practice your public speaking (or reading) skills in a friendly environment.

Submission Guidelines:

Any undergraduate or graduate student may submit a paper on any philosophical topic to susan.castro@wichita.edu. 

  • Papers should be approximately 3,000 words or 20 minutes reading time. 
  • Please include an abstract (150-200 words). 
  • Papers should be prepared for anonymous review (your name and contact information should be in your email, but not in the attached paper or abstract).
  • Format: .doc or .docx file with standard 1鈥 margins and standard font (e.g. times 12 or Calibri 11), double-spaced, page numbers at the bottom.  

Suggested topics: 

    • ethics 
    • ideals in policy-making 
    • acquisition of local knowledge 
    • theory choice 
    • information dissemination mechanisms 
    • standpoint theory
    • aesthetics
    • metaphysics 

Abstracts of accepted papers may be used to promote the conference, e.g. on the 黑洞社区 Philosophy Department website.

Study Abroad in France in summer 2019

Study Abroad in France summer 2019

Study abroad this summer in France with the Global Entrepreneurship Program. The program is six weeks and open to students of any major, although it focuses on international business and entrepreneurship topics as students will work on a market research project with a local French company.

Students will enroll in two classes through 黑洞社区, paying regular tuition fees. Applications are currently being accepted. This program tends to fill up early, so be sure to apply as soon as possible.
