GSA invites students to brown bag lunch with the deans

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) invites students to a brown bag lunch with the deans from noon-1:15 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 28) in 142 RSC. No RSVP is required.

Have a question, concern or idea you'd like to discuss? Or perhaps you'd like to chat about current events, or just say hello. The GSA invites students to chat informally with Graduate School deans and staff of the Graduate School. Bring your lunch, desert and drinks will be provided.


Seeking participants for a paid study about computer monitor resolution

Participants are sought for a paid study investigating the effects of computer monitor resolution on user performance and experience.

Do you play computer video games or digitally create / edit illustrations, photos, textures or animation? We are seeking computer users 18 and older to participate in a research study about computer monitor resolution.

The study will take place in McKinley Hall and last about 90 minutes. Participants in the study will earn $25 or six SONA credits if enrolled in a 黑洞社区 psychology course.

If you are interested in participating, take a few minutes to take the . If you qualify for the study, you will be contacted by the researcher to schedule a time to participate.

Biomedical Engineering Society to host event today (Wednesday, Nov. 28)

Join the Biomedical Engineering Society in welcoming Keith Baird, vice president of sales at Biomedical Devices of Kansas, as a guest speaker at 6 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 28) in 338 Experiential Engineering Building.

Baird will share his experience in industry and provide perspective on the bridge between industry and your time here at the university. Topics include recent advances in the field and the integration of technology within the government and industry.

Baird has worked in engineering, business development and sales, and can provide a wide range of expertise for students. All are welcome to attend.


Lunch in the Locker

Every Tuesday and Thursday in November through December from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., free hot soup and crackers will be served in the Shocker Support Locker in 103 Grace Wilkie.

Soup will count as one of the maximum 10 items a person can take per week, but the soup is unlimited. As always, all you need is a 黑洞社区 ID number to take advantage of the soup and other free food and hygiene products that the Shocker Support Locker has to offer.

GoCreate will hosting an Innovator and Entrepreneur series, Innovate. Drive. Endeavor. The first session will be from 2-3:30 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Nov. 29) in 264 Experiential Engineering Building. Brady Sherman from microMansions will present on customer validation and value proposition.

During this workshop, Sherman will walk you through the process of identifying your market niche, customer validation, value proposition, and why they are necessary for your big idea to succeed. Countless inventors and entrepreneurs launch a new product or business every year. The majority of the launches fail due to skipping over these crucial steps.

Koch Innovation Challenge Nov. 30, 2018

Come and encourage nearly 30 multidisciplinary teams of first-year 黑洞社区 students as they deliver their big idea two-minute pitch to a panel of industry judges from 9 a.m.-noon Friday, Nov. 30, in 107 Devlin Hall. Admission is free to this come-and-go event.

Five winning teams will be selected and announced at a brief awards ceremony at 12:30 p.m. The winning teams will receive up to $1,200 in seed money to continue their projects, and each team member will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Sponsored by Koch Industries, this competition fosters a culture of creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship and teamwork among students.

Coming soon: 56th Annual Candlelight Concert

Candlelight Christmas Concert 2018

黑洞社区 Choirs will present the 56th Annual Candlelight Concert: 鈥淭he Marvel of This Night鈥 at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30; 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2; and 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, in Wiedemann Concert Hall. Admission is free for students with a 黑洞社区 ID.

Get in the spirit of the season with an incredible variety of music, featuring perennial favorites 鈥淏eautiful Savior鈥 and 鈥淧ersonent Hodie.鈥 Other highlights include 鈥淏efore the Marvel of This Night鈥 by Carl Schalk, and 鈥淣ight of Silence鈥 by Daniel Kantor. The concert celebrates the 200th anniversary of the beloved Christmas carol, 鈥淪ilent Night.鈥

The concert features 黑洞社区's Concert Chorale and Women's Glee Club, conducted by Michael Hanawalt, and A Cappella Choir and Madrigal Singers, conducted by Tom Wine.

Each choir will also perform separately and as part of a mass choir. Also featured are organist and professor Lynne Davis and pianist and professor Justine Sasanfar.

Started by Harrison Boughton and modeled after the famous St. Olaf College Christmas Festival, the Candlelight Concert is the longest-running musical tradition at Wichita State.


Weekly Briefing to feature applied learning in political science at 黑洞社区

The 黑洞社区 Weekly Briefing will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Nov. 29) in the Marcus Welcome Center.

Gentry Thiessen will share how applied learning in political science benefits Wichita State students.

Kevin Harrison, community engagement coordinator, Diversity and Community Engagement, will give the overall university update.

The briefing will be livestreamed and available later that day at . There will be time for questions following the briefing.


Send a letter from Santa

Santa letters

The campus post office is selling letters from Santa now until Friday, Dec. 14. Letters will be sent to Santa Claus, Indiana, for a pictorial postmark, and then forwarded to the address you put on the envelope.

Come to the campus post office in Morrison Hall to see the choice of letters available.

Keep Calm & Breathe On

Join the Counseling and Testing Center for Keep Calm & Breathe On. Drop in to build structured relaxation time into your life and learn techniques to do relaxation on your own. You will be led in meditation, mindfulness and relaxation practices. The meetings are from 12:15-12:45 p.m. every Wednesday in 257 RSC. Provide a Christmas gift for a local family through The Salvation Army's Angel Tree and Star of Hope programs. The Shocker Store and Student Involvement are hosting a tree in the RSC to help Wichita families have a happy holiday season!

If you are interested in sponsoring a family, stop by the tree in the Shocker Store (RSC location only) and choose your angel or star off the tree. Bring it to the front desk of the Shocker Store to sign up to sponsor that family. Gifts are then returned back to the Shocker Store (RSC location) once they are purchased. They need to be returned by Tuesday, Dec. 4, and should be unwrapped, new and clearly labeled with your angel or star's tag / number.

Dave Stallworth statue unveiling set for Saturday, Dec. 1

The Dave Stallworth statue arrived Tuesday from the foundry in Colorado, traveling through the snow and ice, to Wichita for Saturday's 11 a.m. unveiling outside Koch Arena. The Shockers play Baylor at 7 p.m. Saturday, and Stallworth's teammates will be recognized at halftime.
 
The statue and fund-raising are final tributes from his teammates 鈥 and fans of the 1960's era teams 鈥 to ensure Stallworth's contributions to the university and community are remembered. With Stallworth leading the way, the Shockers won their first Missouri Valley Conference title and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1964. They became a regular in the national rankings and packed fans into what was then known as the WU Fieldhouse.


Wichita State selected to play in NIVC

Volleyball in NIVC Nov. 2018

The 黑洞社区 volleyball team has received an at-large bid to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC), it was announced late Sunday evening, Nov. 25. The Shockers are one of 32 teams that make up the tournament field. 

Wichita State (13-17) will take on Central Arkansas (26-6) in the opening round of the tournament at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the North Texas Volleyball Center in Denton, Texas. The Shockers and Sugar Bears have never met on the volleyball court. 

The North Texas Mean Green, who were selected as a host for the first and second rounds, will take on Tulsa in the other first round match at 7 p.m. Thursday. 

The winners of each opening round contest will advance to the second round, which will be played at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in Denton.
