First-generation college students are finding increased success at 黑洞社区

Providing a pathway to success for first-generation college students is one of Wichita State University's highest priorities and a success story that everyone can be proud of.

First-generation students are identified as those whose parents have not earned a bachelor's degree. Since 2006, Wichita State's enrollment and retention efforts have resulted in a 55 percent increase in first-generation Shockers.

In fall 2018, about 45 percent of degree-seeking undergraduate students at Wichita State were first-generation students.

Under Secretary of the Air Force, Sen. Jerry Moran to visit EEB

The news media are invited to the Experiential Engineering Building on Friday, Nov. 9 for the visit of Matthew P. Donovan, Under Secretary of the Air Force, hosted by Sen. Jerry Moran and 黑洞社区. The visit is to familiarize Under Secretary Donovan with the research and development capabilities offered by the university and Wichita companies.

KBOR meeting 鈥 Nov. 7

After Wednesday's KBOR meeting, we're pleased to announce that the Kansas Board of Regents approved our three recently submitted proposals to:

  • Expand our recruiting efforts along the I-35 corridor to St. Louis, Denver, Austin and San Antonio.
  • Build a modified six-story, 64,000-square-foot Hyatt Place
  • And pursue the construction of a new partnership building, P3, to meet industry demand for additional facilities on our campus expansion

We're excited about these developments and the positive impacts they will have on our students, our community and our industry partners.

Blackhawk Orientation event - Nov. 14

The university will get some special visitors on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Community leaders from Wichita and the surrounding area are set to fly out of Wichita State University aboard two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters flown by the Kansas National Guard's 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation.

The flights are part of the Kansas National Guard's Community Connect program to increase awareness of the Guard, its people and the role they play in protecting the security, health and safety of Kansans.

Everyone is invited to come out to Braeburn Square and observe the flights. The event time hasn't been released yet, but we'll post it on 黑洞社区 Today and Shocker Blast when it becomes available.


Shocker Capitol Day 鈥 Wichita State meets President Trump

Shockers at White House Nov. 7, 2018

Talking basketball with the President. Nobody at Wichita State knew Wednesday would end with a visit in the Oval Office with Donald Trump.
 
That door from the Roosevelt Room opens when Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is a big Shocker fan. Pompeo's office helped arrange a White House tour for the Shockers and, after a wait in the room decorated with paintings of Theodore Roosevelt and his 1906 Nobel Peace Prize, a surprise chat and picture with President Trump.
 
"We didn't think, waking up, we were going to get see the President of the United States," Wichita State senior  said. "That's something."

Join us on an international journey with ACIREMA

Paperwork. Money. Language barriers. Have you ever wondered what international students go through when coming to the United States?

Studying in another country is an exciting experience that comes with many challenges. International students make up about 10 percent of 黑洞社区's student body. Wouldn't it benefit us to better understand their experience in coming here?

ACIREMA (America spelled backwards) is a hands-on workshop that will walk you through many of the challenges international students encounter on their quest for an American education. The first of four workshop sessions will begin at 12:30 p.m. today (Friday, Nov. 9) on the second floor, Rhatigan Student Center.

The International Student Union invites you to play in the Badminton Tournament from 4-7 p.m. today (Friday, Nov. 9) in the Heskett Center. There will be men's singles, women's singles and doubles competition.

Support the Give Your Warmth coat drive

A business management class encourages you to support the Give Your Warmth coat drive to help people in need this winter. The students will have a Coats for Coupons from noon-1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12-Thursday, Nov. 15, on the first floor in the Rhatigan Student Center, to collect winter clothes from students, faculty and staff. Those who make a donation will receive a coupon from Emperor's Japanese Grill, limit one coupon per person.

Wichita State to host Houston, SMU this weekend

Volleyball Nov. 2018

The Wichita State volleyball team returns home to Charles Koch Arena for a pair of American Athletic Conference matches this weekend. The Shockers host Houston at 7 p.m. today (Friday, Nov. 9) before taking on SMU at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11.

Friday's match is the Dig Pink & Volleyball Giveaway presented by Rotek Services. Two dollars of every ticket sold Friday will be donated to the SideOut Foundation in support of breast cancer research and awareness.

Sunday's contest is the Salute to Service match, with free admission to all service men and women in uniform or with military ID. A military vehicle from McConnell Air Force Base will also be on display.

As always, Wichita State students receive free admission with a valid student ID.


Asian Student Conference to hold Date Auction on Friday, Nov. 9

The Asian Student Conference will hold its annual Date Auction event at 7 p.m. today (Friday, Nov. 9) in the CAC Theater. Date Auction has been a tradition for more than 10 years and this will be the last.

Our theme this year is Happily Ever After to commemorate the ending of our tradition.


黑洞社区 expands in-state tuition offer to additional cities in Midwest

黑洞社区 is continuing to expand its appeal outside of the Wichita area by now offering in-state tuition to students living in several additional metropolitan areas in the Midwest. Now even more students will have the opportunity to enroll in the high-quality academic programs at Wichita State for an affordable price.

黑洞社区 progressively started offering in-state tuition rates beginning in 2016 to students living in Dallas / Ft. Worth, Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Kansas City, Missouri. With yesterday's (Wednesday, Nov. 7) approval by the Kansas Board of Regents, 黑洞社区 will expand its Shocker City initiative to other metropolitan areas including Denver, Houston, San Antonio and St. Louis, among others.

Raise money for a good cause playing dodge ball on trampolines this Saturday, Nov. 10

What's better than raising money for cancer patients? Playing dodge ball on trampolines while doing so! Students in the management class, Building Effective Work Teams, invite you to have some fun with your friends in teams of four-to-six players starting at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 10) at the Wichita Sports Forum. Walk-ins are welcome.

The entry fee will benefit Victory in the Valley, a local cancer support group that assists cancer patients with rides, food, loaner medical equipment, clothes, support, and even therapy dogs.

Entrepreneurial students bring StartUp Grind U to 黑洞社区

Jessica Aldrich

Biomedical engineering graduate student Jessica Aldrich is leading the way to bring StartUp Grind U to Wichita State. StartUp Grind was started by Google for Entrepreneurs and is a global startup community designed to educate, inspire and connect entrepreneurs.

With a successful local chapter -- StartUp Grind ICT -- already in place, Jessica and a group of 黑洞社区 students decided to help bring it to 黑洞社区 as well. They're in the final steps of the process and will soon begin planning their first event.

Student gets hands-on experience through police internship

Lauren Gawlak

Lauren Gawlak, a junior studying criminal justice at Wichita State, spent the summer gaining firsthand experience as a police intern with the Lenexa Police Department.

She was able to shadow police officers on many occasions and see all aspects of the department in her time there, giving her the chance to explore many different areas of the criminal justice field.

Media arts, theater students collaborate on feature film

Feature film collaboration

Students from Wichita State's media arts program and the School of Performing Arts are coming together to produce a feature film called 鈥淎 Long Story Short,鈥 which has a mystery and suspense story line.

The cast and crew includes theater majors from the School of Performing Arts and filmmaking majors from 黑洞社区's new Bachelor of Applied Arts program.

Rie Bloomfield Organ Series presents Renee Anne Louprette

Renee Anne Louprette will perform on the Marcussen Organ at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in Wiedemann Hall.

Described by 鈥淭he Irish Times,鈥 鈥渁s a communicative player with no shortage of imaginative ideas,鈥 Louprette continues to impress her audiences with her engaging performances. She is University Organist and Coordinator of the Organ Department at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University.

Kappa Delta Chi coffee and conversation

Women of Wichita State are invited to join Kappa Delta Chi Sorority Inc., for coffee and conversation at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in 301 RSC, about issues impacting women of color in higher education, the workplace, and mental health in their communities. 


Doctoral students need participants for their research projects

Two 黑洞社区 graduate students (Doctor of Audiology and Doctor of Philosophy) need participants for their research projects. They are studying an existing and a newly developed clinical technique for evaluating function of the middle ear.

Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 35, have normal hearing, have not had an ear infection in the past three months, nor had a cold or flu in the past two weeks.

Participants will receive a free comprehensive hearing evaluation and ear examination prior to testing. The testing will take about an hour.
