New Space Exploration Lecture Series is announced

Space Exploration Lecture

Ad Astra! The Wichita Space Initiative (wichita.edu/space) is pleased to announce the creation of a new Space Exploration Lecture Series. The inaugural lecture will be given by WSI Coordinator and philosophy faculty James Schwartz, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in 231 Hubbard Hall. Schwartz's talk, "Will Space Mining Save the World?," will discuss the topic of space mining from an ethics and policy perspective. Schwartz will argue that easily accessible space resources are relatively scarce, motivating the need for the careful regulation of space mining. The talk is based on a chapter of a book he is writing, tentatively titled 鈥淭he Value of Space Science.鈥

Upcoming WSI Space Exploration lectures include Jim Remar (Cosmosphere CEO), who will speak about the Cosmosphere's restoration project for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 (Jan. 31), as well as 黑洞社区 faculty Atri Dutta, who will speak about astrodynamics research at the 黑洞社区 CORE Lab (Feb. 28).

LaWanda Holt-Fields, chairperson for First Gen Day on campus, will be the featured speaker at the 黑洞社区 Weekly Briefing at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, Nov. 8) in the Marcus Welcome Center.

Zach Gearhart, director of government relations, will give the overall university update.

2018-19 Shockers debut vs. UAPB today (Wednesday, Nov. 7)

Womens basketball at home in Nov.

Wichita State officially kicks off the 2018-19 campaign with the first of four straight home games to open the season. The Shockers host Arkansas Pine Bluff at 6:30 p.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 7) in Charles Koch Arena. Admission is free for students with a 黑洞社区 ID.

The official 2018-19 Wichita State women's basketball schedule poster will be available for fans at no cost and a select number of Go Get It wristbands will be on hand upon entering the arena. Following the game the Shocker players and coaches will be available for postgame autographs.

Save the date for the next one-day-only sale at the Shocker Store, featuring $12 sweatpants! Stop by the Shocker Store (RSC location only) starting at noon tomorrow (Thursday, Nov. 8) to snag a great deal, while supplies last. They'll have 1,000 pairs of sweatpants, but these sell out fast, so make sure to get there early! Limit three per customer. Doctoral students need participants for their research projects

Two 黑洞社区 graduate students (Doctor of Audiology and Doctor of Philosophy) need participants for their research projects. They are studying an existing and a newly developed clinical technique for evaluating function of the middle ear.

Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 35, have normal hearing, have not had an ear infection in the past three months, nor had a cold or flu in the past two weeks.

Participants will receive a free comprehensive hearing evaluation and ear examination prior to testing. The testing will take about an hour. Studying in another country is an exciting experience that comes with many challenges. International students make up about 10 percent of 黑洞社区's student body. Wouldn't it benefit us to better understand their experience in coming here?

ACIREMA (America spelled backwards) is a hands-on workshop that will walk you through many of the challenges international students encounter on their quest for an American education. The first of four workshop sessions will begin at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, on the second floor, Rhatigan Student Center.

What's better than raising money for cancer patients? Playing dodge ball on trampolines while doing so! Students in the management class, Building Effective Work Teams, invite you to have some fun with your friends in teams of four-to-six players starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Wichita Sports Forum. Walk-ins are welcome.

The entry fee will benefit Victory in the Valley, a local cancer support group that assists cancer patients with rides, food, loaner medical equipment, clothes, support, and even therapy dogs.

Come celebrate the inaugural 黑洞社区 Graduate School showcase of student oral presentations of original research for the Three Minute Thesis (3MT庐) Oral Showcase Competition. Note the time change to 3-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in 306 west Shirley Beggs Ballroom, RSC. Students were selected to participate through a 3MT Graduate School video submission competition and nomination process.

The first-place winner will attend the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools meeting.


Volunteers needed for a research study

 Research topic / purpose of the study: Various anti-slip patches will be tested for use with the IOPI device purposed to assess a participant's tongue strength and endurance.

Procedures: Participants will be tested on their tongue strength and endurance using the IOPI and 3 different antislip patches.

Time: Participation is expected to last about 60 minutes.

Inclusion / exclusion criteria:

  • Participants must be age 18 or older
  • No known neurological disorder or recent oral surgery

University Libraries is holding the workshop "Creating Effective Research Posters鈥 from 2-3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in 217 Ablah Library.

Interested in sharing your research?  Posters are an excellent way to share your work at conferences, competitions and other events - but you need to make a good impression fast. This workshop will feature design techniques to clearly convey objectives, methods and findings to a diverse audience. Several software tools will be demonstrated with time for hands-on practice so participants will leave with the skills to begin creating their own research poster. Attract attention and start a conversation about your research!

This is one in a series of Digital Literacy workshops this semester, and is open to all 黑洞社区 students, faculty and staff.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will hold a Trademark Tuesday event from 2-3 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 13) in 204 Ablah Library.

The Rocky Mountain Regional U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), in collaboration with partners located across the Rocky Mountain region, hosts quarterly interactive sessions with experts from the USPTO's Trademark Assistance Center (TAC), which is based at USPTO headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia.

During these virtual programs, TAC experts will provide an overview of various aspects of the trademark registration process, and answer any questions that program participants may have.

Cadman Art Gallery exhibit

The 26th Annual Elements Multi Media Art Competition is an annual juried exhibit displaying various mediums of arts submitted by Wichita State student artists. The exhibit will be on display from Monday, Nov. 12-Wednesday, Nov. 21, first floor, Rhatigan Student Center. The reception and awards ceremony will be from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in Bluestem Lounge near the gallery.

The Cadman Art Gallery is serves as a student-centered space focused on education and exposing the 黑洞社区 community to the arts.
