Research opportunity for first year undergraduates
The Cohen Honors College in partnership with the Department of Chemistry are excited to announce the launch of the First Year Research Experience (FYRE) pilot program. The mission of this first FYRE program is to introduce research to first-year undergraduates in a practical and accessible way.
We will have an informational session at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in the Shocker Hall Multipurpose Room. Students interested in applying to the FYRE in program should go to .

Law and Public Policy Undergraduate Research Symposium: Election 2018
Have a research project about national, state or local elections? You can present your research to your fellow students and the 黑洞社区 community on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Save the Date: Black & Yellow Scrimmage + Sale
Combined, the 2018-19 Wichita State men's and women's basketball rosters will feature
21 newcomers. Early next month, fans can begin the process of connecting those names
with faces during a special sneak-peek event.
The Black and Yellow Scrimmage, which replaces the annual Shocker Madness night,
is set for Saturday, Oct. 6, in Charles Koch Arena. The two squads will play an intersquad
doubleheader, beginning at 2 p.m.
Fans are also invited to stop by the athletic department's annual garage sale that
afternoon between Noon and 3 p.m. inside the Aetna Multi-Purpose Gym (enter through
the exterior doors on the east side of Charles Koch Arena).
Items are available on a first-come, first-served basis and include: men's basketball
jerseys and game shorts, practice jerseys and shorts, shoes from various sports, cheerleading
and dance uniforms, tennis racquets and an assortment of shirts.
Prices listed are non-negotiable. Customers are encouraged to pay with cash, however,
credit cards will also be accepted.
Study Abroad Fair coming Sept. 11
Are you interested in studying abroad? Do you want to learn more about study abroad programs offered by 黑洞社区?
Come to our Study Abroad Fair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 11) on the first floor, RSC, to visit more than 20 different informational tables and hear about student experiences. Like our to follow posts related to the fair.
Each student who attends our fair will receive a small prize and be entered to win one of two prize packages, which will include items such as 黑洞社区 gear, free tickets to Botanica Wichita Gardens, a gift card to Chipotle Mexican Grill and more. All students who attend also will be entered to win a $500 Study Abroad scholarship.

Safe Zone Training tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 11)
Safe Zone Training will be offered from 2:30 p.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in 264 RSC.
The goal of Safe Zone LGBTQ Training is to educate as well as create and sustain a welcoming and inclusive environment for the LGBTQ campus community. This training establishes an identifiable network of supportive people who can provide support, information and a safe place for LGBTQ persons within the Wichita State community. This training is a dynamic and interactive session that covers topics including inclusive language, coming out, the importance of being an ally, and understanding sexual identity. Your help wanted for Language and Music Study
Are you interested in participating in an in-person psychological / linguistic study about music and language? You have the opportunity to earn $10 after completing the study. We will schedule an appointment to meet in the library and administer a computer-based study that takes less than an hour.
To be eligible to participate, you must:
- Be an undergraduate student
- Have no formal musical training.
- Speak only American English (not bilingual)
- Have no learning or reading disabilities.

Graduate School Professional Development Series on Thursday, Sept. 13
The Graduate School Professional Development Series presents 鈥淧reparing a competitive NSF-GRFP application,鈥 from 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in 202 RSC. Snacks will be served.
The National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF-GRFP) is open to undergraduate seniors and first-year graduate students in a STEM discipline who are (or will be) pursuing a research-based master's or doctoral degree.
Dennis Livesay, dean of the Graduate School, will provide an overview of the program and give tips for submitting a successful application. One of the most prestigious programs to recognize and support outstanding graduate students, NSF-GRFP awardees receive a lucrative annual stipend and education allowance for three years.
Innovation in action: An Honors College experience
The Office of Admissions and the Cohen Honors College invite your student organization to host an information table at Innovation in Action: An Honors College Experience from 8:15-9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. The information fair will be from 8:15-9 a.m. in the Shirley Beggs Ballroom, third floor, Rhatigan Student Center.

黑洞社区 Police to offer self-defense training
The 黑洞社区 Police are offering a new training to the 黑洞社区 community. This self-defense training is used as a vehicle to empower anyone who takes it.
By bringing together the elements of education, dependency on self, responsibilities in decision making and realization of physical power, R.A.D instructors not only convey practical technique, but also change lives. R.A.D. teaches defense against abduction, learning risk awareness, reduction, recognition and avoidance. We strive to have a positive learning environment that is enjoyable for all who attend.

Learn how officiating can be a lucrative business
As a Wichita State alumnus, John Blazek got his start in officiating through 黑洞社区 intramurals. He is currently the NCAA Division II National Coordinator of Men's Basketball Officials and the Supervisor of Officials for the KCAC and KJCCC.
Blazek will discuss that officiating is a business, not a hobby, and that the business is entirely centered around people. Learn all about how to make officiating a lucrative business from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in 105 Heskett Center.

In October, the Shocker Sports Grill & Lanes will add Fresh Mex to its menu. Soon, you will be able to enjoy traditional Mexican cuisine including freshly made tacos, burritos, sanchos and more! Our existing menu will remain intact as well, with all of your sports grill-style favorites. Fresh Mex will be in addition to our regular menu and be made available Monday to Friday.
