Awards and Honors
Noell Birondo, associate professor of philosophy, has been awarded the American Philosophical Association 2019 Essay Prize in Latin American Thought. The prize is awarded annually to the author of the best unpublished English-language, philosophical essay in Latin American thought. The winning essay will be published in the APA Newsletter on Hispanic/Latino Issues in Philosophy.
Nicole Delimont, assistant professor in the School of Nursing, was awarded a Kansas Health Foundation impact and capacity grant, along with 黑洞社区 Tech and the Wichita Area YMCA, to work on cooking based nutrition education for students enrolled in healthcare disciplines.
Anthony DiLollo, professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, was honored as the 2020 Outstanding Alumnus for the University of Memphis School of Communication Sciences and Disorders.
Voncella McCleary-Jones, associate dean and chair in the School of Nursing, won a national election to serve a three year term as a member of the National League for Nursing's Nominations Committee.
Richard Nold, assistant educator in the School of Nursing, was presented with an award during the American Red Cross Tribute to Heroes Breakfast for his work providing hurricane relief during Hurricane Florence in fall 2018.
Erin O鈥橞ryan and Elizabeth Loy, assistant clinical professors in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, received funding from Health Concepts Foundation for the AmpCare Effective Swallowing Protocol equipment and training. AmpCare is a FDA-approved therapeutic neuromuscular electrical stimulation system for swallow rehabilitation.
Dorene Owen, assistant educator, joined the School of Nursing in 2019 after retiring from the U.S. Army. She will serve as the Simulation Lab Coordinator.
New Appointments
Stephen Arnold, public health sciences professor, has been named interim dean for the College of Health Professions.
Publications
Noell Birondo, associate professor of the philosophy department, published his paper "Patriotism and Character" in the Handbook of Patriotism. The international collection of more than 50 authors will be released in hardback on Sep. 11, 2020.
Birondo also published a critical review of the Oxford University Press book, Clean Hands? Philosophical Lessons from Scrupulosity in Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews. The review is the most widely read journal in the discipline of philosophy for book reviews.
Dr. Stanley D. Longhofer, professor and Stephen L. Clark chair of real estate finance director, 黑洞社区 Center for Real Estate, was interviewed for "The No. 4 Most Affordable Housing Market: Wichita Kansas." The article was published on EstateEnvy.com
Dr. Jeff Jarmen, director of the Elliott School of Communication was quoted in a national article on climate change.
Projects and Presentations
Dinorah Azpuru, professor of political science, published a piece in The Washington Post on the decline in popular support for democracy in Latin America. Dinorah's published work has led to several international presentations, including one at the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala. She has published three pieces and co-authored with Michael Hall, associate professor of political science in the Post's "Monkey Cage," the leading research blog in political science.
Noell Birondo, associate professor of philosophy, presented his paper 鈥淧ractical Wisdom and Coercive Technai鈥 at the Institute for Philosophical Research in Mexico. The presentation was part of the Institute's colloquium series.
Birondo also presented his paper "The Virtues of Mestizaje: Lessons from Las Casas for an Inter-American Ethics" at the 47th annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy in Mexico.
Samantha Corcoran spoke in a webinar for the U.S. Embassy in Eritrea in Dec. 2019. The topic covered disability awareness and her talk was titled "Disability Services in Engineering." Corcoran informed attendees of how engineers can provide assistive technology solutions for people with disabilities to give them independence and improve quality of life.
In Memoriam
Phyllis Jacobs died on Jan. 10, 2020. She was a faculty member in the School of Nursing for 23 years and director of the undergraduate nursing program for 11 years. She retired in 2013. She and her husband Lou Jacobs are the sponsors of the Jacobs Scholar program in the School of Nursing.
Richard D "Dick" Lewis died on Jan. 16, 2020. He was a 黑洞社区 campus minister.
Gerald D. Loper died on Feb. 18, 2020. In 1963, Loper accepted a position at Wichita State University and remained on campus for 42 years in various capacities. He was a professor, department chairman, dean, associate vice president for research and interim director of the National Institute of Aviation Research. He retired in 2006.
Lynn Schriever died on Feb. 11, 2020. Lynn was an assistant professor of nursing at 黑洞社区 from 1976-1982.
William Thomas died on Dec. 22, 2019. He was a 黑洞社区 ESL program instructor.
Herman Wilson died on Nov. 6, 2019. Herman was a former 黑洞社区 track and field coach from 1967-1983.
