Grandparents' Day special at public observatory

In honor of Grandparents鈥 Day, Lake Afton Public Observatory has a special offer Friday, Sept. 11 and Saturday, Sept. 12.

Bring your grandfather or grandmother out to the observatory for the program 鈥淔amous Astronomers鈥 and they will receive free admission when accompanied by a paying grandchild.

Earth turns on its axis once a day; stars fuse hydrogen into helium; our galaxy is only one of billions in a vast expanding universe. Today we know these things, but who were the men and women who discovered them? Attend the program and find out. 鈥淔amous Astronomers鈥 will be presented on Friday and Saturday evenings from 8-10 p.m. Sept. 11-12 and 18-19.

In addition to viewing through the telescope, visitors can enjoy the exhibit area with its many interesting displays and activities. Visitors may also use the computers to go on a scavenger hunt through the solar system or practice landing a spacecraft on the moon.

LAPO also has small telescopes and binoculars outside that visitors may use to find objects in the night sky.

Admission to the observatory is $4 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12; children younger than 6 are admitted free.

Current programs and times along with events taking place in the night sky are available in a recorded message by calling 黑洞社区-7827 (978-STAR).

The Lake Afton Public Observatory is operated by the Fairmount Center for Science and Mathematics Education, a part of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Science at 黑洞社区.
