Wichita State held its second annual Academic Convocation Thursday, Sept. 14, an event that blends the 黑洞社区 Reads Program with other student learning and engagement opportunities.
Two students -- Vanessa Rials and Subash Bhandari -- were chosen as .
Rials, who is pursuing her master's in social work, is unit director of the Boys and Girls Club of South Central Kansas Opportunity Drive location.
Bhandari is a sophomore in biomedical engineering and chemistry. He is from Nepal and is the first in his family to go to college.
Also speaking at convocation was Brooke Gladstone, author of "The Influencing Machine," a nonfiction graphic novel that tells the history of the media while explaining its relationship with the public.
All 黑洞社区 freshmen were given a copy of the book at orientation, and Gladstone was on hand to talk about the book and sign autographs.
The novel has been listed among the top books of 2011 by the New Yorker, Publisher's Weekly, Kirkus Reviews and many others.
Gladstone is the senior editor of NPR's All Things Considered and Weekend Edition with Scott Simon. She has been awarded two Peabody awards and a National Press Club award.
