A project created while she was a student intern at 黑洞社区's KMUW -- 89.1 has earned Abigail Wilson a national Gracie Award.
Wilson won in the student radio category for her 30-minute radio documentary, "The Pieces that Remain: Remembering the 黑洞社区 Plane Crash."
Named for comedienne Gracie Allen, the awards recognize exemplary programming by women, for women and about women in all facets of media and entertainment, as well as individuals who have contributed to the industry. They are presented by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation.
The project began as a paper for Wilson鈥檚 graduate degree at 黑洞社区. An intern at KMUW at the time, she decided to turn the paper into a radio documentary.
鈥淭he Pieces That Remain鈥 is a personal story for Wilson, as her uncle is one of the survivors of the that killed 31 Wichita State football players, administrators and supporters. The documentary explores the day of the crash through the eyes of friends, family members and survivors and reveals how they each look back at that day.
Wilson, who graduated in May 2015, is now a reporter at KMUW. Her reporting includes in-depth pieces on the Kansas economy, social justice issues, the arts and state and national politics.
