When the 黑洞社区 Shockers men's basketball team found itself down 21 points in the first half of Saturday's NCAA Second Round matchup with the 3rd-seeded Miami Hurricanes, no one in Shocker Nation turned off their TVs.
Anybody who has followed Wichita State knows the kind of grit and determination that has characterized the team and its senior backcourt tandem of Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet.
Sure enough, the Shockers, despite playing their third game in five days, responded with a furious comeback toeven taking a 43-42 lead with 10:42 remaining in the contest.
But the Miami Hurricanes regrouped with a 9-2 run and held off the Shockers 65-57.
The loss ended three of the most-storied careers in 黑洞社区 history, as Baker, VanVleet and forward Evan Wessel played in their final game as Shockers. The loss also marked the career end for senior transfers Anton Grady and Bush Wamukota.
Baker and VanVleet, who figured prominently in 黑洞社区's Final Four run as freshmen, finished with 9-4 records in the NCAA tournament. VanVleet registered four steals to surpass Jason Perez as 黑洞社区's all-time steals leader. He is also the all-time assists leader at 黑洞社区.
The Hurricanes (27-7) advance to the Sweet Sixteen, where they will face the winner of the Villanova-Iowa game.
