MAHA “MAGGIE” SAWAN FELLOWSHIP 

For International Graduate Students

The Maha “Maggie” Sawan Fellowship for Graduate Students was established by Dr. Edwin Sawan, Professor Emeritus in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Wichita State University. It was established in memory of his wife, Maha “Maggie” Sawan, who died in 2010, and honors her lifelong dedication to education and service to family and community. It celebrates her achievements and the respect she engendered in all who came in contact with her.

The Maha “Maggie” Sawan Fellowship for Graduate Students funds two annual fellowshipsThe fellowship began in the fall of 2011, awarding two new Sawan Fellows each academic year.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must:

    • Be graduate students enrolled full or part-time at ڶ.
    • Have an undergraduate degree from ڶ or have completed at least nine (9) credit hours in a graduate program at ڶ.
    • Have and maintain a minimum 3.5-grade point average.
    • Preference will be given to international students enrolled in a STEM eligible program.

Application Process:

  • A completed application incudes: application, essay, and two letters of reference.
  • At the time of application submission, you must upload a minimum of one essay on a provided topic---one to two pages in length. If you choose to submit additional essays, they will be reviewed.
  • At the time of application submission, you can upload an outline of community service, volunteer work, organization participation, honors, or award recognition you would like considered.
  • Applicants must submit two letters of reference to be considered. These reference letters can be uploaded within the application or emailed to Tonya.Baldwin@wichita.edu. Only two reference letters will be reviewed. If additional reference letters are submitted, they will not be considered.

 

Additional Information:

  • Applications and all required application materials were due on March 22, 2024, at 5pm. Applications or reference materials received after this deadline will not be accepted. 
  • Fellowship awards will be made without regard to financial need. Any additional financial resources will not be taken into consideration or affect the scholarship award.
  • The fellowship is valid for one academic year and is not renewable.
  • No recipient will be excluded from consideration based on race, religion, color, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, marital status, status as a veteran, or disability.
  • Awards will be $6,400 each, divided between two semesters. This may be fall/spring semesters or spring/fall semesters with two fellows on campus at any given time.
