ࡱ> FHE "bjbj~~ $0cccccwwwww w_rrrM\crrrrvccz~ccrccpjTw /0_KKcrrr ): Political Science Department 2009-2010 Assessment Report Goal II of our Program Goals is for "students to acquire a knowledge of the discipline of political science and an ability to think critically and analytically in their perceptions of the political world". The Learning Objective for this goal is for students to "demonstrate their general knowledge of political science, have an acquaintance with the methods of political inquiry, and have the ability to employ certain concepts in analyzing and thinking about politics at all levels of government." Our desired Learner Outcome to assess this goal and objective is for all Political Science majors to take the Senior Seminar course and research, write and defend their paper in class before faculty and students. For the fall 2009 semester, we had 22 students enrolled in the Senior Seminar (POLS 600). Nineteen of these students completed the course work and seminar paper. Nineteen presented their research to the faculty and their peers and received passing grades. (These papers are on file in the department.) All of the seniors who graduated in the Spring 2010 completed the Senior Seminar and received passing grades in the course. In addition, ten of seventeen graduating seniors completed a Senior Survey and Exit Interview with the Department Chair. Some of the answers are summarized below: Speaking specifically of your classes as a ڶ political science major: how have they prepared you for your immediate future? For later in life? All of the international studies classes (global issues, intl relations, intl organizations) that I have taken have been very useful in giving me an extensive knowledge range of important international affairs that will become useful in the job position I hope to attain. Senior seminar was also a great class that gave me a good writing sample (which I have already used to apply for internships) and also strengthened my research/presentation skills. Model UN was a very useful class that prepared me to address political and global issues in a large/ public manner. Theyve given me critical thinking skills and general background knowledge. I dont feel I took any class that was a job training or something that prepared me for a specific job like I would have got if I was an engineer student going into that field. For later in life, Im more aware of what some of these jobs are really about so I know if it is something I want to do or not, and definitely given me writing skills, public speaking skills and meeting facilitating skills that lower level management or staff members dont get to use often. I would say that the classes at ڶ, due to the amount of writing, have prepared me for my immediate future. As for later in life, the applicability of the courses will depend upon which career path I follow. I believe if I continue on to graduate school the classes will have prepared me very well. What do you consider the strengths of the ڶ Political Science Department? The professors are very knowledgeable, professional, and qualified in their areas. All staff is very helpful to students. The department newsletter is very useful, as well as the model/un/political science room. The Model UN program is a major strength of the ڶ poli sci department as well as the D.C/Topeka internship program. The heart and soul of the department is the strength and diversity of the instructors. Each instructor brings a different set of skills, perspectives, and experiences to the table. Whenever possible the department should seek to expand on this already solid foundation. I liked that the department was doing more things such as NYTimes talks and the strength of the students groups from the department. The teachers are very knowledgeable in their areas. There was also a feeling of the community, because the teachers seemed to be very approachable. Goal III of our Program Goals is for students to "possess a knowledge and an awareness of the workings of the political world in applied political settings". The Learning Objective for this goal is for students to "participate in activities that will provide the opportunity to learn about the world of practical politics". Our desired Learner Outcome to assess this goal and objective is for students to attend public symposia and lectures on politics and to participate in some of the following opportunities: Model UN, election workshop, internship program, practical politics course, and cooperative education. We had twenty students participate in Model UN and attend two conferences (St. Louis and New York) where they won three different outstanding delegate/delegation awards. Three students served as interns in Washington DC and one in Topeka. One student was inducted into Pi Sigma Alpha, the political science honors society. Some of the events students could attend included two department Career Day panels. Students also engaged in events sponsored by the Political Science Club, the Young Democratic Socialists, the College Republicans, and the College Democrats. Senior Survey responses to the following question included: What experiences have you undergone as a ڶ political science major that you believe will affect your prospects for success in your initial activities after graduating and in those activities which you expect to engage beyond that point. The support I got from the department for political organizations. I have all kinds of political organizing experience that amounts to a 5 page full resume. I also got well-connected into local politics through alumni, which got me non-profit experience, union organizing experience, electoral experience and community organizing experience. Attending national workshops and conferences is a huge part of my success, which gave me networking opportunities and great learning experiences. I have learned to be a better leader. I have met people who challenge me not only in class, but in extra curricular activities. My ability to speak in public has definitely improved. I feel much more confident about talking to people who may not share my views and be able to not let is escalate. The way we engage in classes and in activities such as Model UN have helped me in all of this. I feel like I can sensibly work out differences with business associates, which is a spillover from diplomacy practices in ڶ Political Science courses. The Department will continue to require Political Science majors to complete the Senior Seminar with a senior paper. It will also continue to conduct surveys and exit interviews with graduating seniors in order to identify department strengths and areas for improvement.
