Pha=j70g^p(  g : ڶ WRITING CENTER To: Donald Wineke From: Kerry Jones Date: September 17, 2009 Re: Writing Center Assessment Results/AY 08-09 Assessment Survey Results For the past several years, English composition students (as well as students taking non-English courses) were surveyed about their impressions of the Writing Center, as well as the knowledge of the tutors, and their tutorial experiences. Based on the responses, areas were ranked according to exceeds expectations, adequate, below adequate. The following areas in previous years of assessment were examined: 1. Effectiveness of your tutorial 2. How would you describe your tutors knowledge based on your tutorial experience 3. Professionalism of the tutor 4. How would you describe the Writing Centers environment 5. How promptly were you able to get a tutorial/assistance 6. Based on your tutorial, do you feel your grade increased, stayed the same, or decreased 7. Would you visit the Writing Center again 8. How would you rate the technology in the Writing Center Based on consistent results over the past several years (all of the above areas continually were ranked as exceeds expectations or adequate, it was determined by former English Department Chair Margaret Dawe and myself that no further monies needed to be spent assessing the same areas (at least for one year). Therefore, the primary focus was on tutorial knowledge and effectiveness. Tutors Knowledge of MLA Format In the Spring 2009 semester only, tutors were tested on their MLA knowledge. There was a Writing Center staff of seven tutors (as opposed to four the previous year; GTAs who work one hour per week in the Writing Center were not tested). Three tutors were tested and scored adequate. At this time, I continue to adapt the test I have used in the past to make it a bit more challenging. This year will be of note because MLA (the Modern Language Association) has made several changes to MLA format. The Composition Committee approved adoption of a new on-line only handbook through the Norton Publishing Company, which was supposed to forward hard-copies to the Writing Center for tutors to reference. They have not been received at this writing, which will address with the Norton Companys representative (who will be on campus) during the week of 9/21/09.
