A practical aim of the program is to enhance our students literacy in subjects useful in a variety of occupations, to help them sharpen their critical thinking skills, and to help them improve their communication skills, both oral and written. Toward this end, the English major requires students to take course work that focuses on the major genres of literature: imaginative nonfictional prose, fiction, drama, and poetry. It requires courses that cover the range of American and English literary history, while also introducing students to classical literature, of both western and eastern cultures. The assessment tool employed for the 2008-2009 academic year was an exit survey mailed to the 18 students who graduated in May 2009. Eight graduates submitted responses to it, with the following results: Acquired ability or knowledge (rated as inadequate, adequate, or more than adequate): 1. Knowledge of and ability to use literary terms: Inadequate 0 Adequate 4 More than adequate 4 2. Understanding of literary genres: Inadequate 0 Adequate 3 More than adequate 5 3.
